Asus P8P67 Pro - Now this is odd

SimonMaltby I have the same ram slots on my Asus Rampage Extreme 3 boards and there is nothing wrong with the slots.

You are spot on about the CPU needing to be seated just perfectly. And that includes how tight the cooler is fastened. Remember that the pins are sprung and need to line up with the pads of the CPU, now if pressure is applied unequally during the cooler mounting process then pins slide off pads and do not make perfect contact. Partial if best.

Now partial connections in electronics is not the best thing one can have. So I am not surprised that you sorted by remounting. Another thing there is often residue left on the connectors of ram slots. So as rule I clean them with a lint free cloth and some suitable solution - just to make sure no grease or other residue is left behind.

Pleased that you are sorted.

Well if it is down to the socket it must be to do with the Asus socket assembly - it is subtley different to my MSI socket and the Asus consistently has the boot issues (albeit a little better once I worked out the ram timing thing and updated to the 1253 bios) whereas the MSI is consistently stable/bootable - and I have switched back and forth for the past 2 weeks.

Very odd. If this is the case, I could only think that if the sockets conform to intel standards (which of course they must do) it must be down to component quality of the assembly which again im guessing are from different sources between the boards given the subtle differences.

Even so - I have concluded in my own testing the Asus EFI is great for overclocking and looks good but basically sucks at everythring else.

Well I know that Asus use a different socket maker than Gigabyte because there was all that talk of damaged gigabyte pins on a reviewer board, I wonder is Asus are unique in the socket maker.

I would also not rule out the RAM connectivity. Although I think the socket is probably the main cause of issues I have to say i don't like the ram slots not having a locking mechanism on both sides... a pointless regression that can only make good contact more likely.
