Been a while! Could really use some help! A couple of weeks back my now quite old PC froze, then wouldn't boot. I reassembled everything, still nothing. Examined the motherboard (Asus Z170 Pro Gaming) and it looked like some pins were bent in the CPU socket. So I ordered a used Z270 mobo from eBay (as Ram prices mean I didn't want to completely upgrade just yet). I've happily been playing Baldurs Gate 3 and Cyberpunk 77 on this system.
I took my team and assembled everything slowly, and even downgraded to an old GTX 970 I hadn't got round to selling, in case it was a dying PSU. So It does boot, and run windows etc, but with only one stick of RAM. It will not boot with 2 sticks or sticks at all. It wont boot with XMP on in the bios. I just get the Yellow warning DDRAM LED on the MOBO on.
The Asus motherboard does have Mem OK button, but this doesn't solve the issue.
I've tried each stick of RAM in the 4 slots. One matched pair - each stick works in each slot. The second matched pair, they only work in the 1st slot! The memory is on the Asus QVL list
I've upgraded the bios to the latest version.
I've changed the CMOS battery.
I've installed all optional Windows 11 updates around memory controllers/PCI controllers etc.

Motherboard: Asus Prime Z270-A
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 4x8GB DDR4 2400 (2 separate 16gb matched pairs)
Processor: Intel i7 7700K
Video: GeForce 3070 (currently downgraded to a 970)
SSD: Corsair Force MP510 M2.
Power: Corsair HX 620W
CPU Fan: NZXT Kraken 31
Whats alarming is the number of unresolved posts with similar issues I've found on Redddit/Toms Hardware etc.
