Asus rog PG279Q or PG348Q - Which one?

Hello there awesome folks of overclockers UK!

I am planning on getting myself a new screen soon, probably at a month or two.

So faar the competition is between Asus rog PG279Q or PG348Q. - I prefer if we stick to these two in the topic, other Asus screen who would dwarf them both, however would be welcome :)

My current screen is a Alienware Optx AW2310 23" Wide TFT 120Hz Black.

So faar I can't really decied since I am usually the one to go for the 120Hz + gaming experience. But after a few reviews and a friend buying the screen, I am getting more and more sold on the PG348Q experience.

I plan on gaming Witcher 3 - Fallout 4 - Skyrim - Warhammer Total War - Battlefield 1 - All those Arkham Batman games - And many other demanding games.

In general the big RPG action titles.

I like to play FPS a lot too "But I am not a counter-strike player, more a Battlefield or such kind of guy", or co-op games and MMORPGS. - But WoW doesn't really require that much.

I am not really sure which of those two monitors would provide me the best gaming experience. I heard rumors the PG279Q had a lot of faults, which saddenst me since I was going with that at first, but now I am second guessing. - I found the PG348Q at a pretty nice price too, so money isn't an objection here, and also haven't heard any bad stories/reviews about it.

With that said! Hope you guys can help me out here in a pinch! - Here is som links below to provide som infomation about the two monitors.

There is some new stuff coming out too - http://rog.asus.com/articles/events/ces-2017-rog-introduces-latest-gaming-monitors/ - But I think I need a upgrade for that.

Go for the ultra-wide, it will benefit you a lot more in the games you play than the extra hz, which have, what I would call, phenomenological diminishing-returns, i.e. becomes less and less noticeable after a certain threshold (say 75-100hz). Ultimately the only way to really make a good choice is to try them both and return the loser.

PG348Q. Launch witcher 3 on that monitor enough said.

I play a similar sample of games to you and they all play and look lovely on 3440 x 1440 (once the few like FO4 are tweeked to get running). 100hz is more then enough for those games IMO also and the jump to 144hz is for me personally not worth the loss of 21:9 ratio.

If you possibly had a bigger ratio or played fast twitch shooters like CS:GO then I would say opt for that, but as it stands the ASUS is amazing. Will pair fairly nicely with those 980Ti's in SLI.

Yep, i vote for PG348Q too.
Your setup is absolutely ready to drive both monitors anyway.

If i had the space and extra ££, i really would get the 34" too but im pretty satisfied with my PG279Q at the moment

Definitely the ultrawide, no question. You could also consider the Acer X34 which is a bit cheaper, but uses the same panel. I have one myself and it's excellent... I could never go back to 16:9 now.

Worth mentioning also, the PG27 is plagued with issues... I don't think I've come across such a maligned monitor with countless reports of horrendous BLB, IPS glow, stuck/dead pixels and dirt behind the panel. I wouldn't go anywhere near it personally. I'm sure there are good examples, but it's the quintessential lottery monitor.

I wouldn't say that's true at all. 60hz v 144hz is very obviously noticeable. Even versus 100hz you can feel a difference.

I still got a month or so to decied, but so faar I am betting on the PG348Q, even thought the PG279Q is really nice too.

If people like to show off the screen, or other experience som more it would be most welcomed! :D

I just wish there was a more bland screen but with the same panel and specs. I can't help but think that much of the PG348Q's cost is due to all the gimmicky patterns on the back and the branded LED cast onto the desk.

The X34 costs the same aswell, so not really the looks and what not itself, rather both panels have a unique spot all to themselves and command a nice premium.

Though I do agree, wish we had these panels in a cleaner aesthetic. Design wise the LG panels are my thing

After owning both go superwide, you won't regret it and the games you play look amazing on 21:9.

The Witcher 3 just needs a small mod installing to make the ingame cutscenes 21:9.

I think I am betting my money on the PG348Q, simply due to the pro's and the experience I heard from people seemse to be really running its in favor.

The PG279Q do have many appeals with its 165HZ and all that, but it also seemse to lack quaility control? - And a few other minor downsides.

I think I am sticking with PG348Q So faar atleast. - But there is still a month or so maybe less, until I buy. So people will be welcome to post pictures, write their own experience and aswell review of the two monitors.

Thanks for the comments and infomation given so faar, it has been a very fruitful experience! :D

100Hz ultrawide is pretty awesome but I could never gel with it as a main panel personally ended up with an ultrawide alongside 1440p@144Hz main panel in the end.

165Hz is only really worth it if you religiously play CS and then you'd want a TN anyhow.

Can't say I'm impressed by Asus though quality control shambolic, low quality accessories and quite happy to fob you off with a ropey refurb if there is a problem even shortly after purchasing a "premium" monitor.

I read a post here previously where a pg348q owner had a problem with his monitor, contacted Asus and a couple of days later he had a new monitor delivered to his door. Would like to think they would look after us proper in case of fault. We paid them enough.

Pg348q for sure.

I've had the 279q myself but after testing the 348q sent it straight back. The ultra wide aspect is awesome and it really does add a lot to the immersion of games. Feels so much more free and spaced out. Desktop feels so much better too due to the size increase.

It will look amazing over your 23" trust me.

144 to 100hz is nothing to worry about really. I was able to get used to 100hz very easily and it's still smooth as butter on fps games.

My only gripe is i don't think I could go 16:9 again :D.

Plenty of 16:9 vs 21:9 videos where you can see the difference in game.

Could never return to 16:9. :)

That has not been my experience or the experience of many others - fair enough they do switch at the door but more often its weeks than 2-3 days later and a new for new is an exception.

Took under a week for start to finish, completing the proper RMA form, you get a reply within a day. Stating if it has been accepted and the instructions and further delivery email follow shortly after. The panel was brand new from Asus.

Also had this exact experience for both my pg278q's. Yes new is an exception. Both my pg278q's were refurbished but in otherwise perfect condition.

It did take longer first time around (pg278q) as I went through the Asus email rather than the straight RMA form which nets you a reply and booking within a day or two at most.

What you must use. Don't go through the Asus website.

I've tried both the PG279Q and PG348Q and the Ultrawide is fan frakking tastic.

Unless you play competitive shooters like quake or CS anything over 100Hz is pretty meh, I bought my PG348Q 2 weeks ago and I'm finding that I'm going through lots of older games and really enjoying the Ultrawide experience :)

A lot of my experience (2 of them my own panel) has been with pg278q sadly - with 2 weeks typical and often 3+ week turn around (maybe due to the volume of failures) and more often than not getting a completely unacceptable replacement. Same experience when RMAing the original Asus 4K TN for someone. I've completely sworn off Asus after that and replaced mine with the Dell equivalent just to be shot of the whole sorry story.

Pretty sure I used the eu RMA every time rather than going through the main website.
