Have a workaround fix for my grey screen issues - modified the AMD drivers to use 10-140hz as the freesync range as it seems jumping as low as 1fps instantly to 144fps is whats triggering the grey screen with freesync so having it turn off for those extremes works without losing freesync where it matters.
As an update for anyone else who has been seeing the grey screen issue on AMD cards - someone on another forum I use pointed out that my fix of modifying the Freesync range to 10-140hz was not actually working as for some reason Freesync wasn't activating. After some more testing and reading up on Freesync ranges I have found that a range of 14-144hz works fine as it allows Freesync to work (as has been proven with the OLED on the monitor showing my FPS changes dynamically in game) whilst also fixing the grey screens. I have no idea why 10-140 didn't work but from what I have seen elsewhere there are some odd ratios in Freesync setups. I'm happy it now works up to 144hz though as that means I am only losing Freesync below 14fps, where the experience would be beyond help. This is still using CRU to adjust the range, and this setting persists between AMD driver updates which is good.
I did some testing with the latest AMD drivers (the ones with the Halo infinite specific updates) and the grey screen issue still persists so it is still a tweak needed for making it work.
I'm not seeing any image retention as was mentioned elsewhere in the thread - I'm a bit of a terror as I don't use screensavers and leave games paused for quite a while (a couple of hours sometimes), but even so have not seen any myself.
I should also comment on how I'm finding the monitor a few months in - am still very happy with it. The fan is still entirely inaudible for me - I can only hear it if I put my ear next to where it sits at the back of the monitor, and even then it is still almost silent. Performance is still excellent - have been enjoying playing more native HDR games like Guardians of the Galaxy and Halo Infinite - both look sublime on the screen. Now I have freesync actually working I can't spot any difference between this in Freesync and my 144hz Gsync monitor on my wife's computer, so I am certainly very happy with how smooth everything is.
