I want to put my server upstairs but want to get great network transfer between my two PCs. I can't put Ethernet cabling direct due to the house layout. I have an Asus ac68 as my primary router to my BT Infinity 3 service. Would a second router give me any speed benefits setup in bridge mode over gigabit powerlines connection.

There's no way to know. Both wireless and Powerline are heavily influenced by environmental issues.

There's usually a way to route a cable. There must be routes used between floors for existing facilities. Drilling the walls and running externally is a good fall back.

It's relatively new house and drilling isn't an option or I would have already done so. If powerline or bridging isn't an option I will need to locate the server next to the Asus router in the hallway which is limited in its space availability.

They're both viable options.

You asked which would be faster. Powerline is very variable, works great in some houses, awful in others. It's the same with wireless. You need to suck it and see.

If I had to choose I'd start with the Powerline option.

BTW the low age of the house doesn't stop you drilling. If you had Sky or Virgin installed that's how they'd get in.

Thanks for the reply, the non drilling option is more the wifes part. She doesn't want unsightly cables running everywhere.

I will look into decent set of gigabyte power lines.
