I’m looking at buying this router to replace my virgin SH3. It has a WAN/LAN port listed can anyone tell me if this can be used as a standard LAN port in addition to the other 4 (giving me 5 in total) if I use the stand alone WAN port to supply internet from the SH3?

I have the RT-AC86U but use it as my main router so not 100% on this but I think you may be able if it's set in AP mode. I see answers online saying it does but these are a couple years old and are for the RT-AC66U. Another option, which I do, is to attach a 5 or 8 port switch so that you only use 2 ports on the router but gain 5/8 from the switch.

EDIT: Just realised that the RT-AX86U has 6 ports, 1 WAN, 4 LAN and the 1 WAN/LAN. To me, the description suggests that the WAN/LAN port will be a standard LAN port so you would have 1 WAN and 5 LAN available to plug the SH3 into.

Thanks for the reply. It would make sense that the wan/lan port can be used as a 5th lan port. Documentation isn’t clear though and only refers to this port when using it as the WAN port. Was hoping someone had the same router and could confirm.

The extra WAN/LAN port is specced at a higher speed and given priority in packet processing. It's labelled as a "gaming port" to plug your gaming PC or console into for highest performance on the router.

RJ45 for 10/100/1000 BaseT for WAN x 1, RJ45 for 10/100/1000 BaseT for LAN x 4, RJ45 for 2.5G BaseT for WAN/LAN x 1

The dedicated gaming port on RT-AX86U automatically prioritises any wired device connected to it. No complex configuration is needed, just connect your gaming PC or console to the special LAN port to give you a fast, stable connection that's always at the head of the queue.

Also looking at a new Asus router as I realised my RT N 56U is 10 years old now! Its only wireless N I think.

Two options seem to be:

RT-AC86U Wifi5 and £130
RT-AX86U Wifi6 and £230

Would I be mad to buy the RT-AC86U now considering its already 4 years old? £100 seems quite the jump considering the RT-AC86U would presumably be quite the upgrade already.

I got the RT-AC86U around 2 months ago and it's been great. I have the Asus Merlin software running on it too. If you're not going to make use of WiFi 6, I don't see the need to have the AX86U. I thought about getting that myself but got the AC86U as instead.

The AC86U easily handles my 1Gb connection.

Here is a comparison between the to and if it's worth the upgrade -

Nice one. Went for the AC. Can't really justify the extra £100 and should be more than enough for my needs.
