E8400
2x2gb 1600 ripjaws 8's DDR3

helpful pointers appreciated please!!

That's probably as helpfull as you're going to get. Like I mentioned the Nforce chipset based boards were simply horrendous at overclocking. If you really want to get the best out of your chip purchase a decent P45 mainboard.

Having said that the real world difference between 3.6GHz and 4GHz will be minimal, in fact if you had two systems sat side by side, one @3.6 and one @4, I think you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference in speed.

I've managed to get 4.3GHz out of my core i5, but for daily use it sits at a comfortable 3.6GHz.

Overclocking a dual core should be ok on the 790i...

It may sound odd, but try it with lower CPU volts.. For me it worked strangely well with an original striker.

If that doesnt work, have a google, see what other people have done, that's where I found my answers.

Over 3.6 it cuts the speed of my processor after reboot to 1.8  cpu-z backs this up to!

The 790 wasn't all that bad, I swear I've even seen some 4.2+GHz Yorkfield clocks on them somewhere.
