Hey all, sorry this is a big long winded.

As the title says. Recently (in the last week) I have been getting seemingly random black screen crashes. This has happened mid-game, with mild desktop use and at idle. There seems to be no obvious reason for it.

I hadn't had any of these crashes with I was running my 2070 Super OC, but in the last month upgraded to the 4080 and a Thermaltake GF 1350watt PSU. But even so, it had been fine for a good few weeks.

The crashes result in the following:

- Black screen (monitor loses sync) and everthing freezes including iCue lightning effects - Have to force shutdown
- Black screen (monitor loses sync) and everthing freezes including iCue lightning effects and fans ramp to 100% - Have to force shutdown
- Black screen (monitor loses sync). Sound plays in the background. iCue lightning effects keep running - Have to force shutdown
- Black screen (monitor loses sync). This happened once during normal shutdown. Had to force it to shut down.

I had some iCue errors in Event Viewer, but updating iCue cleared those.

I have reseated the video card and power cable (Running on single 600watt rail)

I have run 'sfc /scannow' which found some errors but fixed them, and they haven't shown up since.

I have run a bunch of health check commands through PowerShell and they found no issues.

I have reinstalled current drivers (546.01) - Haven't tried a previous set yet.

I made sure Windows10 is up to date.

This setup had been running absolutely fine for about 2 weeks, it all started going pear-shaped after installing MW3 and the relevant updates for that, but I'm not 100% sure that's the cause.

Event Viewer shows the following errors that seem to lead up to the crash:

Error: "The description for Event ID 0 from source nvlddmkm cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer." There's a buttload of these, but they don't always show up pre-crash.
Error: "The server Windows.Gaming.GameBar.PresenceServer.Internal.PresenceWriter did not register with DCOM within the required timeout." Usually get a few of these
Warning: "The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID {2593F8B9-4EAF-457C-B68A-50F6B8EA6B54} and APPID {15C20B67-12E7-4BB6-92BB-7AFF07997402}" Usually heaps of these

And there's been a couple of random others that didn't seem relevant.

CPU and GPU temps are fine.

I'm at a loss. :(

Thanks for all the replies.

Just to fill in a few blanks...

- Machine has locked up since updating iCue, I just haven't had any iCue errors in Event Viewer
- Currently MW3 is about all I have time to play and yes it started after the install of it. However, I had previously been playing MW2 and the MW3 Beta with no issues.
- Reinstalling the old card isn't an option. It's long gone
- Can't remember where my DP cable came from. May have come with my monitor. But I've been using it for years without issue.
- Board drivers are as up to date as a near 4 year old board can be.

Thus far I have:

- Updated the motherboard BIOS (I was only 3 revisions behind ).
- Fully uninstalled the videocard drivers again, and made sure to do a clean reinstall. Didn't use DDU, actually forgot it was a thing. If the crashing keeps happening I'll go through the process again using this.
- Turned off Game Bar. Uninstalling is greyed out. I don't even know what the hell it is or where it came from. Might have been from a Windows update that snuck under the radar
- Also got rid of Armoury Crate services to make sure they weren't conflicting with iCue as they had done in the past, but nothing that caused a crash. It pains me to have the TUF emblem cycling rainbow colors. :(

This was all done last night, and fingers crossed, no crashes yet. Will keep you updated!

Have you tried to uninstall iCue to see if that might be causing an issue?

Also this could be your issue:

I have reseated the video card and power cable (Running on single 600watt rail)
Haven't uninstalled iCue, and I would have thought the PCie5 rail would have been fine. Could be wrong. Doesn't really explain why it was fine for weeks though.

I can tomorrow, currently at work. Although it's not much to look at, just a single cable running from the card, through the rubber bung in the case and into the PSU.

I've sat there and wiggled the cable while it's running and couldn't get it to crash. The cable/plug isn't getting hot either so I assume it's making good contact.

Please post some pics if you can explaining how it is cabled up to the PSU.

Looks like you might be on to something.

After all the messing around the other night with drivers and BIOS updates and such I thought I had it sorted. No crashes randomly or under load, all was sweet. That was until this morning when I put my side panel back on. Welcome back black screen crashes.

By the looks of it, my side panel is resting against the power cable ever so slightly and I've been reading about black screen crashes when the power cable is bent.

I'm gonna see how it goes over the next couple of days with the panel off, and then most likely order a right angle adaptor.
