Hi looking at getting one of these boards any one that owns one what are your thoughts anything to worry about issues or are they decent thanks

Well the main thing about the hero is the price. At this price point you have a lot of options from b550 to b670. Even amongst x870e it one of the priciest options. You then have Asus world renowned customer service/RMA.

I only got it because I wanted to F about with Eclk and I could have gotten that on older models. But to be blunt I have been an Asus user for 20 years and I don;t know how to get around on other boards. Like them or hate them I know my way around An Asus board no matter how good or bad they may be. I do have another board from Giga and it's all right. But I still prefer my asus board just because of familarity.

Thanks for replying I've got a gigabyte x570 at moment upgrading I've had asus boards in the past and got on fine I'll buy the board from ocuk as they deal with the rma should it arise just wondered what people's opinion was on the 2 boards

I was planning to get the cheapest X870e with an ECLK which was the taichi lite but a deal come up on the hero for £450 so jumped on that.

3 months in with a 9800X3D and I’ve not had any issues, overclocked the CPU to 5.6ghz and memory to 6600/28 stability has been rock solid with no bugs or crashes.

The only downsides of note are that the main M.2 heatsink can interfere with some coolers and if you use more than 3 Nvme drives your main pcie will run in X8.

While I do like the board I wouldn’t personally want to pay full price and if the ECLK is not something you want then the X870E Nova pretty much gives you everything else for quite a bit cheaper.

Thanks joxen glad your happy with it mate just want a board that can run 3 nvme which this and the strix e can don't think any other board can do this unfortunately even the gigabyte x870e master can't

You want to run 3 in general or 3 at gen 5 speeds?

I am struggling with that question myself. The 2 (well 3 if you count the price) things that are putting me off the Hero are:

  1. The Hero has noticeably fewer USB-A slots on its back I/O panel, I can sometimes get device heavy and would like the option of having more than 6.
  2. The 2 PCIe slots share the same lane on the Hero. So if you wanted a sound card for example on the 2nd PCIe slot, that lowers for graphics card PCIe slot from x16 to x8. The Strix doesn't have this problem as they are on different lanes. For those interested, this is the lane info for Asus X870E ROG Crosshair Hero:

And this is the lane info for the ASUS ROG Strix X870E:

It seems like the Hero is the better choice if you are going heavy into overclocking, while the Strix is a more balanced MB for the average user. I don't tend to mess around with overclocking, certainly not to an advanced level, which perhaps is another point in the Strix's favour. Would love to know what others think who are also facing this decision.

You can always use the slimsas on Hero if you want to add in a sound card without taking lanes off the gpu.

Just to add for those who might be interested and are also still trying to make up there minds:

The ASUS ROG Strix X870Edoes not have a back-plate, given the price of the MB that one surprised me.
Some people reported on reddit due to the placement of the the top m.2_3 drive, large AIOs had some clearance issues. I haven't seen anyone mention that in any of the video reviews I watched though. @Joxeon That is a fair point, though I will be honest I would rather actually be able to use the PCIe2 slot without it sharing lanes with PCIe1.

2 questions if anyone knows the answer to them:

  1. Has anyone had any issues fitting the Asus ROG Ryujin iii-360 AIO onto the ASUS ROG Strix X870E? Or is it a good fit on that MB?

  2. From the researching sharing lanes, the general feedback (at least on reddit) has been dropping the PCIe1 to x8 by using the PCIe2 slot only equals a couple percent in performance for the GPU and isn't noticable. Has anyone done that with the Asus X870E ROG Crosshair Hero? Or is it a hard no, don't share the lanes like that.
