Hello, I’m looking for some help from someone with above average knowledge of high end systems if possible.

I built my system Feb 2015 and consisted of the following....

I7 5820K CPU
Noctua NH-L12 cooler
Asus X99 Deluxe M/Board
16GB DDR4 Ram 4x4 Corsair LPX 2800
250GB Samsung evo SSD
Gigabyte G1 GTx970 Grfx Card
Corsair RM1000 Full modular PSU
Corsair K95 RGB Keyboard
Razer Lachesis Mouse (upgraded to a Roccat Tyone 6 months later)

Ok so I’ll start from the beginning, everything was fine for the first 6 or so months, then i noticed when my machine rebooted from warm, or cold boot i would get a little flashing cursor in the corner of the screen, and then after several power downs and back up it would boot.

After initial investigations all pointers on forums website said it was the windows installation so i figured ok ill get round to that and sort it out and re-install at some time.. Fast forward to January..... My machine is set up to reboot after a power cut and i use a WEMO to remotely turn on the machine, this has worked perfectly until this reboot issue started as you have to be there to stop windows doing a repair. So I figured, now is the time to sort this once and for all.

I decide to image the SSD to a spare drive and wipe and re-install (good job I did ) when windows 7 tried to re-boot again to do its usual "finalising settings" i got the flashing cursor again. I wiped and tried again sever times then decided to image my SSD back to what it was as clearly that wasn’t causing it.

After a little more investigation, a lot of people said it was possibly my memory, even though i had run a Prime95 test for 9hrs without issues along with Memtest 86+. On the basis of peoples responses I purchased another 16GB of Ram.
I figured if it wasn’t that id have 32 GB ram.

It wasn’t the ram, so now I have 32GB of good ram, I also changed the mouse and keyboard as well.

After another round of testing and messing around (won’t go in to detail) but i bought the new Asus X99 Deluxe 3.1 mainboard.

During the weekend I fitted the new board and I still have the same problem.

So to summarise I have tried the following..

1. New Ram
2. New Board
3. Mouse & Keyboard
4. New HDD(s)
5. Removing all components apart from GFX, CPU, RAM, PSU, MOUSE, KBD.
6. Re-Installing windows.

Board is on latest BIOS XMP is disabled and running stock settings.

I am still getting either a flashing cursor in the corner or a non-booting windows 7. I am able to hit DEL and get into the BIOS and change stuff every time without issues.

I have found a few posts and on YouTube videos that say it’s the xHCI handover that’s the issue, I have contacted the suppliers who contacted Asus on my behalf and they say there is NO such issues with their board.

So after spending in excess of £500 in replacing bits and hours wiping and re-installing I’m now stuck, I have only 3 more parts to change, the PSU/ CPU/ GRFX card.

I don’t think its the PSU or GRFX card because once the machine is running it will stay on for days and even weeks if i don’t reboot, and it plays all the demanding games AC, Witcher, Street Fighter V etc. and no problems.

Anyone got any ideas where to go from here? I’m pulling out my hair now!

Really? A bios setting? But I have flashed the latest BIOS and reset to standard settings since this problem started (to try and fix it) , you don't think it should boot ok with safe defaults ?

If not, what do you suggest I check/ change ?

When I say it wont boot, I can always get into the bios.

What do you mean what is it set to? Its set to boot from Port 1, I have also tried port 2 and same. all bios are defaults I figured best not to change.

Oh the default is AHCI I can change it to IDE but then I would loose the Advanced part of the AHCI. BUT for testing purposes I shall try it. I only bought the board on the 26th of Feb the other day so I cant see it being a setting really.

I appreciate all your suggestions though :-) ill keep trying them.

Do you have a spare PSU to test with maybe a different GPU to see if that resolves the issue?

Would assume it's something like a faulty cable or loose connection, however you have replaced everything so cables will be plugged in properly. PSU or GPU would be my next go-to.

Sadly I don't have spare PSU/ GPU due to costs, once booted tho as I said, it will stay on for weeks unless I reboot. plays all the high end games no probs and of course prime 95 in nightmare mode lol

Here is what I get.. (hope the picture comes out)

I will have to check the code but from memory it stops at something that states in the manual as generic " Legacy Boot "

Ill do some more testing when I get home, the machine works fine as far as turning on, going into the boot menu, changing settings ect every single time. I have standard settings (as in I have already reset them several times)

I will be home in 45 mins so will check led, not sure what csm means but will check the manual and see.

Ok so CSM is enabled and here are the settings, sadly i have tried 4 times to reboot and read the led code but sometimes this does happen, you think you fixed it because 10 times it reboots ok then starts again.

The only thing i have changed in the BIOS is disabled boot screen logo and increased the POST time out to maximum 10 seconds so it gives me time to read it if there is any issues i may have been previously missing.

With it disabled or on auto the machine cannot see any sata connections, the option to choose boot priorities ect are all greyed out.

When i re-enable it, the options come back and i can then see the sata ports and re-set the boot drive to P1.

just took me abouit 12 attempts to get the machine back but its booted again now.

The hard drive hasn't kicked in at this point though so how can it be a driver or software problem, it does it trying to even install windows on a fresh new sata drive.

Yes they do have issues, I found loads of them, supplier has spoken to Asus manager and they are saying there is NO problem, I have sent videos/ you
tube clips/ forum posts showing them and they still say Asus say there is no issue.

I have tried 2 new hard drives, SSD and regular sata drive still the same. I bought a new main board £330, new mouse/ keyboard and £110 on Ram. Flashed to latest BIOS and still same.

I don't know what more I can do?

I haven't tried a single stick of Ram but I did buy a new set of quad channel corsair because people HaD suggested it was that even though it passed memtest86
I only have a keyboard and mouse plugged in nothing else.

After further investigation into X99 chipsets in general it looks like some systems are having problems with the UEFI. I will install yet another hard drive and test that theory with it disabled.

Yeah right at the start I had done a BIOS reset and flash ofnthe old x99 board and on the replacemt x99 3.1 version it was disabled by default anyway. I haven't turned it on since because the machine can't successfully start every single boot.

I dont have any prepherals when im testing for the issue, just 1 SSD, 1 keyboard and 1 mouse. the keyboard is Corsair K95 RGB which was purchased at the same time as the system last FEB and the mouse is Ropccat Tyone which is fairly recent about NOV last year.

Will try with no mouse or keyboard.

I think you've cracked it!!

Without keyboard and mouse... Touch wood I have booted and shut down with power button and re started some 15 times now, each time it's worked fine.

Now the problem what's causing it and how do I stop it?

Computers are hard to use without those 2 bits ;-)

I have a spare keyboard and mouse, a razor Lachesis and uhmm some keyboard that lights blue, can't think of its name.
