Indeed, the gamer and the extreme audio (pci & pci-e) have front panel connectors, they are only Intel HD audio only compatible so most cases wont work properly with them.
 
Bought a xonar, the other day - which came this morning. Upgraded from an audigy 2zs, and the difference is impressive. Fantastic sound quality whilst listening to music, which is the main reason i bought it. Looks really nice too.
 
Anyone know if the xonar will encode dolby/dts down the spdif so that you get 5.1 or whatever from games wihtout using analogue.
 
yes it will, but if you're going to do that then just get a cheaper card like the x-meridian/x-mystique ect. The cost of this card is going towards the quality of the analogue outputs. not much point in buying the card if you arent going to use them
