Asus Xonar D1 config - HELP !!

You still need to set the chanels in game too, if the game doesn't automatically sync with Windows. Bioshock is one example.

The majority of games just sync with Windows these days though.

The channels are not selected in game, they are selected from the xonar control panel.

The options I have are:

headphone
2 speaker
4 speaker
5.1 speaker
7.1 speaker
etc etc

what i meant vector was do you run 7.1 speaker or headphone. If you run headphone, how do you select 8 channels in the asus software?

using dolby headphone in asus software sets windows settings to headphone. so auto config from games would be headphone? And I guess if you change it to 5.1 in game would that not then configure windows to be 5.1 rather than headphone?

I wanted to compare the positional audio some more between my xonar d1 & DH via dr50 and the gainward sound explosion 5.1 headset I have. Just want to make sure I have all the settings right :)

My settings in the control panel; channels circled in red:

The speaker numbers/setup you refer to is under the Analog out section.

I'm on win 7. Have you tried the latest drivers then?

My mate opposite has the latest dirvers from the asus website as he only bought the D1 3 weeks ago, I went and installed it all for him.

He is also on XP, I ran over there last night and checked, how DOESN'T have the 'channels' option either.

I will download and install the latest drivers tonight but i am guessing its because your on win7?

If on XP, I believe that channels is equivalent to setting the speakers using the sound properties in XP. 7.1 = 8 channel. 5.1 = 6 channel etc.

Long time since I was using either XP or owned a Xonar though. My memory could be failing me.

In his picture above uriel the analogue out is the windows speaker setting, ie, headphones, 5.1, 7.1 etc.

Uriel is correct. With XP, the channels are altered by changing the speaker setup in sound properties, so 7.1 is 8 channels. With Vista/7, the speaker setup or channels in Windows sound options, can be altered with the channel selector in the Xonar control panel. An X-Fi has a synchronise to Windows tick box when using XP. When you change the speakers in the X-Fi control panel, it also changes the speaker setup in Windows sound options. Why Asus did not implement a similar thing with Xonar cards under XP, I don't know.

marsman the point of this is to find out why vector has an audio out option on his asus control panel and i dont! I suspect because he is on win 7.

Uriel and I both said the same thing. Asus panel analogue out = windows settings. Vector has an additional option box to select audio channels. Were trying to work out why :s
