Asus z97-A Graphics not working

I am having trouble getting my Graphics card to work.

I have done a similar installation with the same motherboard and had the same problem but managed to solve it but this time its killing me. The display output comes out of the motherboard and not the graphics card. When i turn the Integrated Graphics off and tell the Mobo to boot off the PCIe a blank screen comes up and i end up having to plug a VGA into the Mobo.

I went into the settings again and clicked the option "mutli monitor" - this enabled the Graphics card output and i am now running a HDMI from the card it self. Unfortunately when i run a check using Speccy or try to benchmark using toolkits the system says that i am only running Intel HD graphics.

I have checked my settings with the PC i built previously and everything seems to be the same. I am pretty sure the graphics card is working as its running the HDMI atm.

Would it be that i need to check and update the drivers on both Mobo and Graphics?

Windows software have anything to do with it?

Does anyone have the same motherboard and had similar issues getting the mobo to boot off the GPU?

Does anyone have the same motherboard and know the settings i need on the Motherboard so it can run the Graphics?

Also ,

The device manager has picked up the GTX 970 and has said its working correctly as well as the HD graphics 4600

Also says they are both up to date

Sounds as though your system is still running the integrated graphics and detects the integrated graphics first. Try:

Remove video card.
Plug HDMI into motherboard video.
Boot into the BIOS.
Disable the integrated graphics and set PCIe to first display initialized.
Save and exit.
Unplug HDMI from motherboard and plug in video card.
You may also have to set PCIe speed from auto to gen3.

Should now detect the video card.

While Cosimo went over it in more detail, it sounds like you just have to plug your monitor cable into the graphics card.

Edit: I might have misread some of what you said, it sounded like you were telling us that it should run off the mobo when you have a 970 when you should have always plugged it into the card; that's what threw me off.
Unless that is what you're saying.

You can run both intergrated and a pcie card at the same time. I do this.

Once it is installed it should list the card in the device manager, if it is not listed then it may indicate that it is not installed correctly, not correct power, drivers not yet installed and so on. If you have put the power in right and the nvidia or amd drivers are installed then it should display in the device manager. Once its in device manager then just move the display cable from the onboard gfx to the pcie card and wait for the display to turn on.

I'd update the bios of the mb to the latest for the best graphics card compatibility.

also try a DVI-I to vga converter on the card and connect to the screen that way. I've had problems using HDMI when connecting to a new screen that uses a lower resolution to the old one.

Another way to go about it is to boot into windows in safe mode and set the res to lower in there.

I have the same motherboard but I don't have the issues you're having the graphics card is working fine.

Have you tried resetting everything in the BIOS to defaults first and then disabling onboard gfx?

Have you plugged the monitor into the correct socket in the graphics card? Theres usually only one socket that Windows recognises by default do you get the BIOS splash screen to appear and then Windows is blank/black screemed? If so try the other socket, etc.

Have you tried a different card with same mobo? It could be that one or the other is just plain faulty.
