Well I've been saying for a while Asustor need a more budget friendly nas to compete with the popular Synology DS213j and it looks like they just delivered.

Their new AS-20xT and AS-202xTE range have just launched. Long story short an Asustor AS-202T features an Intel Atom 1.2GHz chip with 512mb ram for a tenner more (£170) than a Synology DS213j.

An AS-202TE doubles the ram to a gig and adds an hdmi out for htpc duties via xbmc for just under £200.

This is fantastic news and hopefully disruptive of the nas market bringing more competitive prices.

In case anyone is wondering I love my Asustor and they are a subsidiary of Asus so not just a flash in the pan

I've just been reading about the AS-202TE today and for the price, the Hardware specs are very competitive and it seems on paper to be better value than any Synology or QNAP alternative. I was considering the Synology ds213+ but I understand the new atom processor on the Asustor is better at serving multimedia and video which is a primary feature for me. I think a new Synology with the same processor is just around the corner but I'm rather impatient :-)
Also considering app and community support, I think Synology are ahead of Asustor right now but for how long I wonder.

Indeed. I agree the apps/software are more mature on Synology. Asustor are gaining ground fast and in order to do so their units offer a great spec/cost balance.

Yes spec wise the CPU speed is the main difference but the chip in the 3 series is the Intel Atom CE5335 off the top of my head, built for nas units with hardware media support for transcoding etc

I don't know if the chip in the te is just a slower version of the same SoC chip or a standard atom chip
