At a bit of a dilemma with next move

I'm a bit concerned because the company I work for is moving to a remote based approach which I like. However do they understand that my cost of living is different to people up north. I'm comfortable where I am but I guess jumping ship it's probably required.

Best thing I could advise would be to educate yourself on opportunities available to you elsewhere.

There’s nothing wrong with applying for jobs and interviewing to gain information about the market and environment in which you work in. It gives you better negotiating potential in your current job too.

I can’t see why going remote would impact your income? They can’t pay you less unless they explicitly discuss it with you.

Is 44k for senior dev in the south east pretty low?
I'd say that £44K per year for a senior developer in 2023 is very low, particularly in the south east.

I was earning £40K in Norwich in 2012, and I was relatively underpaid then, based on what other companies were offering me at the time (I had other job offers that paid more). I jumped ship in 2013 to work in Cambridge for £60K, then moved to the USA a year later to earn more than that.

I know someone who is currently a senior developer, working remotely while living in Manchester, who's earning £65K+ /year.

Yes! Even on the normie tech salary scale (see indeed.com for indicative salaries/comp) rather than the FAANG, finance or similar salary scale (see levels.fyi for indicative salaries/comp).

You should probably be looking for at least 50% more than that at a normie tech employer if going for jobs with that title (*do not tell the recruiter your current comp* only target comp if pushed for it).

Agreed most of the senior devs I know are remote and are on 55-80 depending on where they work. I got a 30% raise when I moved company last year, remote once again main difference is I join a different stand up in the morning. (This is North/Northwest btw)
