At a cross road in gaming, sell Xbox Series X and go back to PC?

Hello,

I sold my pc and bought a series X a couple of years ago, I love my series X for it's simplicity, no messing no noise it just works, the sound is amazing, it's cheap. There are a few issues though.

I'm using it on a desk plugged into a 1440p monitor, due to building work I'm soon to get a dedicated office where I could wall mount a large TV for the Xbox, this will cost around £1000, I would need to add a lounge chair to that so I can sit back and not use the same office chair I've been sat in all day which I would have to do with a pc

The pad, I'm used to now but coming from PC gaming and enjoying online FPS games I get frustrated at times with the pad

My Steam library, it lays dormant with many games Inc one of my favourites, Hunt Showdown which I miss

If I was to consider a pc it would have the benefit of keeping the 1440p monitor, I could sell the series X and use that money to put toward the PC which I am hoping would work out cheaper than a TV and lounge chair.... Maybe

So, as I am out of touch please can you spec me a PC max of a grand, is it doable now that prices have come down a bit for 1440p gaming?

I would need everything, mouse, keyboard, sound (I have major concerns about sound because it can be in an issue on pc where as the Xbox just works) I have Xbox wireless headphones not sure if these can be used and as mentioned I have the monitor. I think I would need windows too, not sure if my old key will still work. GPU I would prefer AMD because my monitor is freesync, not sure if that's still an issue with Nvidia GPUs

Not interested in RGB unless it's subtle, I would like a small silent, stylish case that takes as little room as possible but is as quiet as possible.

I don't want to overclock or undervolt or mess around with fan curves, I want plug and play as much as possible

Talk me into it folks, or just stick with the Xbox because it's not worth the faff or my budget isn't good enough!?

Thanks

Honestly with the way pc gaming gpu prices are going I'd maybe suggest staying with console, a fair few of us are looking at it as an option due to the greed of gpu manufacturers....

You could just grab a keyboard and mouse (it should supports them now iirc) for your fps games. You also have the game subscription service on xbox which is probably better than the pc version of it and while you can pick up loads of games at discounted prices etc on pc, the long term cost of games is something to consider.

Nice one thanks looks good, I'll look at it in more detail shortly

Edit - just noticed keyboard and mouse will still need adding and PSU isn't ideal but still it is what it is for the budget

@lsg1r

That's why I sold up, couldn't get a GPU to upgrade my vega 56 and even if I could they were silly expensive, thought they had come down though

You can't use a keyboard and mouse on Xbox with all games, only some and there aren't many.

I also need to consider space, I'll already have a desk and monitor for work, if I keep the Xbox I'll want to add a separate chair and an expensive large TV

Your welcome.

Yes ideally a 750w gives you more options in the future but adds £20 to the build

The 6700xt could be dropped down to free up funds but gaming at 1440p May be limited, best to check out reviews/benchmarks.

Just looked at Xbox wirless headset works with Bluetooth 4.2 which I believe The motherboard I specced comes with 4.2 Bluetooth , please check to concur.

Your Xbox Wireless Headset works with Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles as well as other devices. You can connect it to Windows devices via Bluetooth 4.2+, or through the Wireless Adaptor for Windows (sold separately), or by connecting with a compatible USB-C cable.

That's good to know thanks, I would be tempted by the wireless adapter eventually and maybe just use a cable for a bit to keep the costs down of it's not supported. If it is supported then that great and I've got all the options

Prices have come down on rtx3000 series but mostly to 'retail' (at best, so no real reductions due to rtx4000 series) rather than scalper prices, new rtx4070ti is £800+, AMD isn't much different although you might get some reduced prices on lower end cards but you're wanting 1440p which means 'mid range' or above imo. (I'm not as up to date on AMD due to needing to use Nvidia for cuda)

While I wouldn't say £1000 isn't doable for a 'decent' rig I'd argue you need a little more budget.... for a longer life if nothing else. I'd be looking at 8c/16t cpu minimum and in all honesty while it might cost a little more I'd go AM5 over AM4 because of AM4 being 'end of life'.

Code for windows - I've literally just used a windows 7 key to activate windows 10 on my 5950x rig a few months back, so you should be able to use any old 7/8/10 code you have laying around.

Yeah I've just been having a quick look around and understanding what's available since two years ago. It's not looking good for my budget really, I would want better performance than what my budget will buy otherwise I think I'll be disappointed that a £450 Xbox looks as good as a £1000 PC

I've just read through this thread with interest as I too am looking to upgrade on a budget. I nearly placed my order for a 5600x, MB and RAM but the more research I have done I feel now I should wait and see what arrives with the 13th gen intel chips and what impact, if any, this has on prices of the 12th gen and what AMD has to offer. However, the simplicity of buying an Xbox series x and a new monitor to play WZ2 with kbm is very appealing. Just watched a few videos showing how it can be done. Intrigued!
