Try not to waste people's fuel by getting across when I can. If and when I have children I'll wait for the green man.

so what was the reason?

On my way home I saw a school kid waiting at the lights, frantically pressing the "stop" button and waiting for the green man. Then a lady came, had a quick glance and when no cars were passing she legged it to the other side.

The school kid saw all this and after a few seconds, hesitantly followed her.

A car nearly ran him over.

I don't want to get into the specifics of whose fault the above incident is. I just wanted to know what people generally do at the lights.

i dodge cars like im in the matrix, i will not wait if i deem it safe to cross.

Often if i see cars coming i look oposite the crossroad to see if their light is on amber/going to red, if it is, i go!

Right, so the majority doesn't care about peds crossing at red lights, why is there such an uproar then cyclists do it then ?

Because cyclists often shoot across a junction when there's traffic in the way and when pedestrians are trying to cross, or when a car is going across a junction and has to dodge it. Many instances I've turned right on a junction only to have to do evasive manoeuvres when a cyclists shoots past the red light on my left. Furthermore cyclists flow along the line of traffic not across it (which is a shorter distance) and pedestrians crossing are predictable, cyclists are just a menace. Doesn't bother me though, I've had a cyclist run a red light and run into me (I was a pedestrian) - he came off rather badly. Tough boobies tbh. Had no sympathy at all, but I did get a bruise on my thigh.

Kid needs to look before he leaps :p

That's the problem, kids aren't able to make those judgements and are bad at appreciating the speed of a car. As an adult it's easier to weigh up that information instinctively, furthermore as a driver (generally adults tend to drive) you can make a call when crossing the street as a pedestrian.

However the adult should have been more responsible with kids about and waited for the green man to set a decent example to the kids.

The green man actually waits for me to start walking.

On a serious note, it's only by about 14 years old that you develop the ability to judge the speed of an approaching car, you need to teach children and young teens to cross properly.
