At what tread depth do you change your tyres?

Is it not a good idea to replace them before you get to this point?

New approach - me likes that!

Certainly would save a few brown trouser moments at the booths of the Dartford Toll X'ing

At the moment - when they get to the point where they'd drop below the legal limit on the drive to get new ones.

I wish I could change them sooner, but I've got absolutely no money at the moment :(

After reading an article on the benefits of allowing even say 2mm as opposed to 1.6mm, I'll replace mine around 3mm.

At the moment my Eagle F1 GS-D2's are at about 4.5mm, after 12k miles. Not bad going really. Should be ok until after the winter at least...

Generally when they get to being near illegal then I finish them off on track.

I have never had any problems driving when wet as I drive to the conditions. The recent Fifth Gear feature on tread depth was a gross over simplification.

Agreed.

Mine are about 2mm on rears and were fine on the motorway in a thunderstorm as i drove to the conditions. Better in the dry when they are that low too

TBH when the trend for the weather conditions warrants them, otherwise I leave the summer tyres on . If I know I am doing a trackday soon then I might want to scrub in a new set before hand, just to bed them in,

Tyre pressure is more important.

3mm.

Changing tyres a bit early > aquplaning into a stationary car becuase I am a cheapskate with shocking tyres

quite right to! although on the bike I wait for the ware indicator normally, but that is a fair bit more than 2mm on a bike tre isn't it? Definetly dont skimp on the bike! if you had a credit cards worth of rubber holding you on the road, you'd want it to be the best!

The corsa has dirty budgets on it at the mo, but it is my £150 passion wagon and they wil ldo until I upgrade to something more credible! Hardly use it anyway, might just sack it off when the good lady finally passes her test. Save up for my M3 :D
