Just purchased and it's OEM and I didnt order a heatsink/fan doh!!

Errm can I just use the block thats on the A64 3700+ or will that not be efficient enough ???

X2 4200+ is not a particular hot CPU so don't see why not really, if you are running everything at stock then it should handle just fine. Just make sure you give the HSF a good clean and re-apply thermal paste after you removed the residue. Just keep an eye on the temp.

I'd say give it a go before you order a new HSF.

Yeah I won't be overclocking it.

The other CPU is only 6 months old so will prob try and flog it on here for a price :) or keep it as a backup (not that i think i'd need it)

it may just be enough
the amd x2 come with heat pipes which the single cores bot get
so be surprised with idle temps of 40s and loads of 50s

Depends which X2 - my X2 3800+ came with a bog standard aluminium HSF, only the X2 4400+ upwards and optys come with copper heatpipe HSF I think.

my x2 4200+ came with a simple aluminium heatsink which iirc is the same as the single core ones.

My opty came with the heatpipe version but I didnt use that and stuck it on my x2 4200+

Yeah bought it from here on Monday, impulse buy. Only got an AMD64 4000+ a month ago from OCUK and OC'd it to 3Ghz, i didnt think the X2s would go that high, but their you go.

I've just done a very similar thing, shelved my 6 month old 4000 which happily ran at 3.1 Ghz, and bought an opty 165 which at the moment is only at 2.45 Ghz but i'll be pushing it as far as I can !!

sell your old cpu and use the money to buy a better heatsink, arctic cooling freezer pro comes to mind as being very cheapo and good on perfomance. a value for money option especially since your not overclocking.

lot of the high performance heatsinks these days require board to be removed to put screws through etc so its good that the freezer is a clip on method.

I'd recommend it, it did a great job keeping my 4000 from toasting itself, and as i type it should hopefully be keeping my opty from going pop - got it stress priming both cores while at work :o
