Athlon A64 3000+ Vs X2 Dual Core 4200+

Thanks for the replies.

I am assuming the x2 4200 would be preferred over the x2 3800?

It is essentially the final throw of the dice to get as much from this S939 system as possible which has served me sooo well. When I do change, it will mean new Mobo, New CPU and New RAM :(

Also, I am a little disappointed at having just installed the X1950, I expected a GIANT improvement over my X800XL but I am getting a definite "lag" in some games... I would have thought I could run HL2 with max settings at 1024x768 for example but it doesnt.

Also, Flight Sim X runs TERRIBLY so I am guessing that these games are more CPU than VGA intensive? Anyhow, will raise this in the VGA Card forum.

Thanks for the help.

If your having problems with HL2 im pretty sure a better proc will sort it. I run an opteron 146 @ 2700 with a 7800GT and it is pretty playable (drops to maybe 22 fps occasionaly) at 1280 x 1024 in EP 1 with HDR on, max settings. with HDR off it runs perfectly smoothly. Since your GFX would wipe the floor with mine I guess your processor is the bottleneck.

No, the 4200+ is not worth it over the 3800+. Then only time I would recommend the 4200+ over the 3800+ is when the motherboard/other hardware limits overclocking.

The recent 3800+s have been hitting 2.6Ghz on stock volts and then up to 2.8Ghz with a bit more Vcore. The two chips are the same core, just one has its multiplier upwards locked one higher than the other. Ie. The overclocking potential of both chips is the same. As long as the motherboard is good enough, you'll be able to get just as much from the 3800+ as you would from the 4200+, but for £20 less.
