Hi

I've just purchased a new XFX ATI 4890 after my 8800GTX decided to fail this morning.I've installed the new card but do not see anything on screen i.e. no boot up messages nothing. :(

Initially it booted to windows fine and I removed the old drivers and restarted. Now I see nothing on the screen. Tried both monitors.

I have a Corsair 620 power suppply and have both 6 pin connectors connected. The graphics card has a few red LEDs which flash twice when PC is switched on, I don't know if this helps.

Any ideas?

I'm using DVI and both PCI-E connectors are connected.

I was able to boot into Windows XP initially without a problem. It's only after a rebooted that now I cannot see anything on screen.

Try putting your other card back in! I had a really wierd issue with the 4800 series that as soon as I updated the drivers I would get a blank screen and it was a proper pain to then try and get anything again. The way I got round it was to use an older ati card to install the ccc but without the display driver then swap back to new 4800 card and just do the display driver and it seemed to work.

Except that OP's original card is an 8800GTX...

Yeah at the time my main card was an 8800 gts as well, but it still worked as soon as I stuck that back in just to make sure it was noting other than the ati drivers / gfx card messing about. I don't know if he will have as much grief as I did with mine but like I said to get my 4870 x2 to work I had to install the ccc on an older card first I used a 1900xtx.

Thanks guys will try some of the suggestions. I do have a simple ATI card in my HTPC that I can try.

I've been at it all day without success. :(

This is where I am at. If I disconnect everything and connect the card up to power supply the system boots with appropriate messages.

When I add connections to the rest of the PC (5 HDD, 1 DVD drive + System fans), system fails to boot.

Above points to a power problem but it's intermittent and hence I am not sure. My power supply says it is SLI compatible so it should have enough juice for my system right?

Note:
I can tell when system will boot and when it will not after I hit the power button. When it works the Graphics card sounds loud->then goes quieter -> and then silent. Otherwise it sounds loud -> then goes quieter and stays there.

Tell me if I am being stupid but what do drivers have to do with PC not posting anything to the screen? Surely drivers come into play when PC loads (or doesn't load) Windows.

It should not stop it from posting the bios information etc. to the screen.

Thanks for the suggestions people.

Update.

I've managed to get everything working for the moment. I put in the old graphics card and managed to get into the bios. I noticed the graphics card start to behave in the same manner as the new card which at first bamboozled me. I was using the molex 6 pin power plugs provided with the 4890 graphics card and I believe these were faulty.

I've now switched back to the Corsair 6 pin power plugs and everything seems to be working.

I don't think this is the whole story though as I was using these plugs initially when I encountered the problem.

I believe my motherboard (Gigabyte 965p DS3) could be the problem as it is quite old now. I am thinking about going Core i7 soon.

It does sounds like a power issue, not enough on one of the rails or nearing the limit.

The fact the PSU is SLI specified doesnt mean it's going to supply enough juice in all scenarios.

This did cross my mind.

The HX620W has more than enough juice, it's been running my system fine for ages

rafster, what other components do you have in your system?

I do have 5 HDDs, 1 DVD drive in my system which will increase the load.

I still cannot imagine the Corsair HX620 having problems. Unless it is faulty which is a different matter but I still suspect it would completely fail rather than show these symptoms.

I've seen a 4850 and a moderately ancient nvidia both go dark after new drivers, both cards stayed that way until they were fully powered down (the 4850 reset after 10 mins of staying in the PC with no power, the NV needed removed, which would have suggested a seating issue, but it was repeatable).

8gb RAM
4 HDs
1 DVD
SB X-Fi Elite
About 11 fans

I've also ran 4850CF on it with no problems.

process of elimination, try booting up with just the main boot Hard drive, the graphics card and the DVD drive, if it works then add another HDD and so on until it fails, then you should know where the problem lies.
