ATI 6 Series

I think the minimum we can expect will be that the 6850 (if it's going to be called that) will at least be between the 470 and the 480.

This completely defies logic, I've lost count of the amount of times people have went on like this. RV670 to RV770 and RV770 to RV870, people have said "oh, it'll only be a marginal upgrade".

Why would they waste money on making a new core with performance you could get out of simply overclocking the older gen a bit?

They can increase the shader count a fair amount and rework the core logic for a higher clockspeed.

Single digit performance increases quoted by some people in this thread are just ridiculous. As has been said, Cypress GPUs aren't limited by the power of their shaders, they're limited by other parts of the core. A noticable performance increase could be had from reworking the rest of the core and not even increasing the shaders (which explains why they're using Cypress shaders and Southern Islands core logic).

Remember when the 4870 was only going to have 480 shaders and be 50% faster than the 3870? That was on the same process node as well, and the 4870 turned out to be more than twice as fast as the 3870 in some scenarios.

I've found people have a terrible memory when it comes to new releases. The 4850 was also on par or slightly faster than the 3870X2 as well.

I think its safe to expect a 1.4x performance increase, hopefully it will be closer to 1.6 with a little more to come after a driver update.

we also expected 5970 performance with the GTX 480, and as we learnt aiming high is never a good idea

Given how the 4xxx and 5xxx series have blown the competition out of the water, I hope for good things from the 6xxx series. I myself, however, will be skipping this generation.

I remember the majority of people on xs thinking so

The "majority" was probably "a few extreme nVidia fanboys". It was clear for a long time that nVidia was lying about the performance to keep people interested and to stop them buying a 5 series.

I wonder how much comprimise ATI made to get the 5XXX working on 40nm... IF the process if a little more stable (and that's a BIG if) does that offer any opportunity to push performance?
I have to admit that I thought the 480 would trounce the 5970 when it was 1st announced but as we got closer to release (the 1st one, not the actual one about 6 months later) that confidence had disappeared.

Aren't ati/amd bringing out a new range of cards in Q1 2011 on 28nm as well? Wouldn't it make more sense to have the high end cards on that rather than 40nm?

Fermi had to be hamstrung By Nvidia with much slower clock speeds and also had to be severely cut back on the SP count.

We never got the 512SP 1000Mhz Core with super fast shader speed that Nvidia wanted. If we had we would have got the 5970 beater.

I think having more but 4 way shaders and overall taking up less space so it clocks better is one thing thats going to give a decent but not MASSIVE gain.
