ATI and 120hz

So are these 120htz monitors much better at playing games like Css with v sync off? compared to a normal 60htz lcd with v sync off?. I remember the good old Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 930SB that I used to own playing Q3 at 120htz was smooth as silk.

Without reading much else or going into the long winded reason why above 60 fps doesn't matter any way, much the same way they advertise 600hz TVs etc.

Theres no issue with ati cards and 120hz, its simply the case that powerplay is yet another new version due to new hardware, and they neglected(rather stupidly, yet understandably) to add support for the drivers to decect the use of a higher refresh rate screen and automatically set higher 2d clocks in powerplay. Its understandable because almost no one uses 120hz lcd's yet, yet stupid because it wouldn't have taken really any effort to have a different profile.

As said, use gpu clock tool to disable powerplay or use profiles to set higher 2d clocks. I can't personally say if eyefinity is set to 60hz max or not, I wouldn't be surprised to see it capped to 60hz when one or more of the screens being used is a 60hz, not seen if anyone has 2/3 120hz screens and they are still capped at 60hz in eyefinity.

Their powerplay needs work, badly, but most powersaving/idling stuff is pretty shoddily done still, both companies have issues with it and both companies are only really starting to get to the point they can shut down certain parts of the core. Because of the number of shaders and the amount of clusters its rather tough in terms of core logic to have as effective power saving use as a CPU. Hopefully in another couple generations both companies will have idle power down to next to nothing and seemless moving between idle/3d and no bugs.

On a powerful card and system, why would vsync cause lag? I thought that only affected older systems.

on games like UT 60fps (vsync) the mouse responds very bad (input lag?) so the only way to play it is vsync off and with something like 120fps but the game gets stuttery :(

I bought my lad a Samsung 2233RZ (120Hz) and an ATI 5770 card for christmas to replace his 60hz LCD and 8800GTS. He plays CSS competitively and wanted the monitor so he can play at 120Hz at low resolutions, I thought i was doing him a favour by buying him a 5770 as an extra gift but he wants to go back to his old 8800GTS.

I think he's managed to get it running at 100Hz at native res (1680x1050) but he wants to run at 120Hz res (800x600).

Are ATI likely to fix this issue in a driver update, is their another fix we could try or should i just give him his old card bacK?

I imagine they'll fix it via drivers (possibly BIOS), wouldn't expect it to be fixed any time soon though probably months.

In the meantime you could try disabling the power play feature but it's a bit of a bodge fix.

Thanks mmj

Just done a google on disabling powerplay and it looks complicated. do you know of an easy guide and what's the chances of it working so he can play css at 120Hz 800x600?

Cheers
