Just built a system for someone with an ati X1900xt, and latest cat driver. Monitor is an old Hansol 17" crt (still has great display), and winXP see's it as the right model. But whenever i switch between destop resolutions, windows ignores the refresh rate i set, and defaults to something else eg, i set 800x600 to 100hz, change the res to something else and back again, and bang!, it goes to 85hz.

THese 'default' values must be stored somewhere - can any ati owner tell me where please?

On my old X800 XT on a 21" CRT I had to use a program called "Refresh Rate Fix" to get it to force the correct monitor resolutions.

There are options in the CCC to fix refresh rates.

options include: Same as desktop and manual refresh rates.

If your still having trouble after using the above, i would locate the Monitors latest driver (inf) on the web and try that.

Windows stores a seperate default refresh rate for every resolution, and it's 60 Hz (curse Microsoft for helping kill CRTs). In theory once you've set the desired refresh rate for each res (by changing to it and selecting a new refresh rate) it should continue using that refresh rate.

As said above the CCC can force refresh rates, but you'll find it only works in some games and not others. Doom 3 for instance insists on running at 60 Hz. The only way round this is to edit your monitor capabilities and remove 60 Hz from the resolution in question. I would recommend 'ReForce' for this, works a treat. In your case you would get it to remove all 800*600 modes from the registry except for 100 Hz. Then Doom 3 would run 800*600 @ 100 Hz.
