I've never had an ATI card before and the experience is pretty rubbish so far :(

I've installed my X1950XT and dont a fresh windows isntalled. I installed drivers from CD and I've just seen the catalyst 7.something in the other order thread. I've also installed that.

I've tried opening control centre and it's not doing anything. I can't view any ATI software

Any Ideas?

ATI drivers are a b***h (I wonder if that's a swear word  ) ... I've always had bad experiences with them!

You have to take upto 15mins out to install them properly, otherwise it does a Windows 98 impression and co[o]ks up royally.

  • Download "Driver Cleaner Pro" *
  • Add/Remove programs -> uninstall ATI everything
  • Restart into safe mode **
  • Run Driver Cleaner Pro and add all the ATI options and click GO or CLEAN or whatever the button is
  • Restart into normal windows and install latest drivers

* You have to pay for the latest version, google for it and you'll find it for free - older version but works fine

** I always have to go into run->msconfig->ok, then boot.ini->tick safeboot, then when in safe mode do the same but untick it. then when you restart you'll be in safe mode depending on whether you ticked the box or not. I can never remember the button to press on startup for safe mode..! lol

f5 for me to boot into safe mode, just keep hammering f5 when you start ** computer then after post is done it should ask u what u wana do, safe mode or normal. If not f5 then maybe f8.

Yeah you do from when i was lookin at drivers for ati cards today well the driver package things. You need .net framework 1.1 or higher. Which i dont think windows after a fresh install has.

With nvidia drivers there unified so one works for all so very rarely do you really need to uninstall and reinstall the same driver. If the model of gfx card wasnt supported with the driver you have, then uninstall as normal and install a new driver that supports the new card. Then swap the cards if u want.

Did this many a time with most of my nvidia cards. And never had a problem.

Have had both nVidia and ATi cards and never had any problems with drivers.

Well I did with catalyst once but it was fault of windows SCF keeping the same bloomin files.

You need .NET installed as already stated.

Install 1.1 and 2.0 and hotfixes for net.

Or even better uninstall them all and only installed the WDM and display driver. ATi Tray Tools is the best application ever for display driver control. However the last time I checked (long ago, due to not having a PC for a month) the 1950 cards overclocking support wasn't quite refined.

Yeah but if you're upgrading drivers, you still have to uninstall/reboot into safe more/drivercleaner/reboot/install, just like the ATi ones.

It may work without all that, but it's not guaranteed to just install new drivers straight over old ones.

I thought 1950xt didnt have any new drivers apart from whats on the driver cd?

From what i remember reading on the xt versions of the 1950 from topics on this forum.

Right I've just done a diver clean and Installed the 6.1's form the CD and I have exactly the same problem.

Is it too much to ask to see a bloody control panel

Pretty miffed  :(
