hi all, help would be appreciated, ok i bought a second 4870 towards the end of last year, as some newer games were stuttering with just the one, in particular need for speed shift, so got a second, worked straight out of the box, upped the res to 2560 x 1600 great, then i decided to put the catalyst drivers on, and to cut a long story short they were pants i did a system restore with no ati drivers on and all worked better, anyway people have been ranting on how much better the 10.3 drivers are so today i decided to give em a go, enabled the crossfire option once installed, booted up modernwarfare 2 blue screen, video drvier error as i disabled bsod, tried a second time, and get a thick pixely line going from bottom to top of screen and framerate was really low( mouse stuttering accross to options ) also had fraps running framrate at 9fps on start screen of modernwarfare 2, reduced the res to 1600 x 1200 still line going up screen but fps better 38, but i was getting better fps than this with the windows basic drivers, am i doing something wrong, or am i better off not bothering with ati drivers,

well not sure if it is windows personally, as it happened when i first bought the card on vista then again on windows 7 when that came out, and i only reformated 2 weeks ago, as i was having trouble with some epson drivers for my printers, so this is a new install had the same problem 3 times now with ati drivers, also i just tried to boot left 4 dead 2 and got a blue screen, dosent do this without ati drivers installed,

You need the drivers installed to get the card working fully. The drivers your using are Windows drivers which lack OpenGL and are based on old drivers, so your not getting improved performance or game fixes etc etc...

Are your 2 4870's matched? What's the brands, memory amounts and model numbers?

Plus, what's the rest of your system setup?

both 4870's are different brands but 1024 ram rest of system is q6600 - 4 gb ddr 2 pc 5400, 2x 80gb intel ssd's raid 0, 2x 500 gb hdds raid 0, all at stock speeds

Can you test each card independently? Maybe you have one faulty card, thus when your enabling crossfire it's not working due to the card being bad.

With Windows default drivers you will NOT have crossfire enabled you NEED to have the proper ATI drivers installed.

hmm well i took the newer of the 2 cards out, ran left 4 dead 4 at 2560 x 1600 and still 60 fps on one card which is exactly the same as when i had 2, so looks like one is not working. cheers

ah sorted it one of my power connectors to the second card mustnt have been giving enough power, i swapped cables around a little and voila left 4 dead 2 now runs at 90 - 115 fps at 2560 x 1600, cheers

hah lol you got me there paul, glad i took the time to find out really, getting much better fps now, i even turned up the aa and af to max in modernwarfare 2 and l4d2, not tried anything a bit more graphics intense yet,
