Final Thoughts
There's a few bumps in performance here and there. And if you're still on the original Beta driver that came on the CD with your HD 5970, it's really worth upgrading to the latest 10.1. Really, I thought we wouldn't see anything to get excited about at all, but combine a few bumps in performance here and there with the normal range of bug fixes and it's a nice little driver update.
Mass Effect 2 users might be disappointed with the fact they can't get AA working. The good news is that a hotfix driver came out soon after the release of this driver which fixes the problem while adding some CrossFireX performance improvements. You can nab the driver here.
While the 10.1 is being considered a standard driver, Terry has come out on Twitter and said, "CatalystMaker: 10.1 is just a standard release to fix up some bugs, but 10.2 and 10.3 will indeed have some major new features". So the good news is that while this driver isn't the most exciting, hopefully we have something more to talk about in February and March.
At the end of it all, there's nothing wrong with the 10.1 driver and you may as well take the chance to upgrade. If you're on one of the new HD 5600 cards, though, you'll be disappointed to know that this set doesn't support the newly released model.
Hey Guys,
I seem to be getting a few issues after installing these drivers eg Dirt2 just crashing forcing a hard reset, didnt have that issue with the 9.12's. Quickly checking the event log it would appear the drivers arethe issue.
Going from one driver version to newer versions I've just installed over the top, can I do that in reverse, reverting back to the 9.12s by re-installing over the 10.1s without using Driversweeper etc?
Cheers.
OMG seriously? Only taken them five months to fix the BBC HD problem if so.
Still no fix for the grey screen crashes though, no any mention of rectifying the appalling lack of 2D acceleration laid bare by Tom's Hardware in this article, which makes for very interesting reading:

You guys having crashing issues, have you checked to see whether or not your fan is getting faster as the card gets hotter (I.e. automatic fan control). I had some tearing in Mass Effect after going to 10.1 ME2 hotfix drivers and the cause was the fan staying at idle speed all the time.![]()
...with audio still playing I might add) which force me to reset the PC.
still has 9.12 as the CCC version

i've just reinstalled CCC from the AMD site and it now says 10.1 compared to it saying 9.12 previous
Sort of similar problems here (Sapphire 5970 as well)....although I've had it for the last couple driver releases up to and including the ME2 Hotfix.
Hard lockups across of variety of different titles (with audio still playing I might add) which force me to reset the PC.
Only success I've had has been playing games in a window and/or disabling Catalyst AI, which more or less negates the point of the 5970. Lockups are completely random and hard to pin down, and are certainly not temp related or anything like that......could happen on the title screen of a game after 5mins or after 2 hrs of Mass Effect 2 like yesterday.
After coming from a rock solid 4870x2, the card is turning into a bit of a lemon at the moment, and while you would certainly hope that it'll eventually get sorted, the fact that the 5970 has been out for a while at this stage and ATI are still introducing basic errors into their latest drivers (power saving etc).......I'm not holding my breath.
Install-wise, safest way might be the go the add/remove way through control panel and then re-install the 9.12s after a reboot.
If that doesn't work, then the next step may well need you to uninstall the card from the device manager (and uninstall drivers) so you can reboot with a standard VGA setup.
ive noticed an issue with these drivers, when screen goes into standby it does not actually go into standby, just blank black screen but monitor does not go into standby mode!
anyone else experience something similar?
Yep I have the same issue, in my case the screen is a blank dark grey but the monitor is not on standby. This is a widely reported issue I understand.
