Final Thoughts

So, which driver is better? Well, let's look at it like this. For every positive result, that driver set gets a +1. For no gain we see the driver get 0, while for a drop in performance the driver gets a -1. What all this results in is the ForceWare setup getting a -5 and the Catalyst one getting a +12.

The winner by a clear margin is the Catalyst driver suite, making them the best driver for Windows 7.

Cue the BS comments :D :D :D :D

I've never had what I would call major issues with Nvidia drivers but it's really annoying having to switch drivers from one to another just to so a game works how it should do i.e. faster framerate / bug removed.

As an example official Nvidia Driver 185.85 Overall Average FPS: 52.625 in Crysis, same bench using the official Nvidia Driver 186.18 Overall Average FPS: 35.25 virtually same with the latest 190.38 drivers also, reinstalled 185.85 & 54fps again.

Nvidia fix one thing then screw another thing up from one driver to the next, not good if you play various games.

I've used Nvidia cards just as much as AMD/ATI but one thing for sure I'll be switching back to AMD/ATI at least they dont break what wasnt broken, my previous card was an 8800GTX btw.

you don't call switching driver sets to play a different game a major issue? **** me. this is exactly why i went off nvidia back when i had an agp 6800gt. :D

since then i've been ati all the way.... but i've just got an nvidia card again because i didn't think these sort of things still went on. guess i was wrong. :(

well i have a plan. i've got all my old games working with my nvidia card. i just won't get any more games. sorted. :p

What a waste of time review...

That aside:

nVidia seem to have tripped up a bit lately... 185.xx drivers were mostly pretty broken under the hood with lots of poorly implemented or missing features.

186.xx was a return to form - aside from Nelly I've not heard of any major problems with 186.18 aside from a couple of missing video playback options on highly specific setups...

190.xx so far have been attrocious with lots of crashes, bad SLI support and performance drops - they also appear to have a VRAM leak somewhere causing massive slowdowns after a period of playing.

You're pretty brave to post that Loadsa, how dare you criticise nVidia on the OcUK forums!

Well I didnt want to overhype the problem otherwise I'd get the Nvidia fanboys making out I havent even got a GTX 295 or something daft. :D

Maybe it just effects the GTX 295, I doubt a lot of people would notice as I doubt Crysis is played as much now so people woudnt notice with the latest drivers - I only bought the game a few month ago.

Newer drivers should not ruin the performance of older games or bring out new bugs, I havent had an AMD/ATI card since the HIS X1900XTX IceQ3 so cant really say if they have issues like I'm having with my Nvidia GTX 295?

The worst thing is, it's only ever fanboys who claim nVidia drivers are better. The sensible people were under the impression that they were relatively equal between ATi and nVidia.

I didn't realise how bad nVidia drivers were, then again I haven't used them for a while and won't be for some time at least.

At least it's from a reputable source who are (arguably I suppose) impartial.

*waits for resident nVida trolls to come from under their bridges*

And no, that's not flamebaiting. nVidia trolls are the ones who can't bear to hear anything that's not positive about nVidia.

What an odd response.

If it's such a waste of time, why did you bother doing what is essentially the same thing?

I think it's an important article, not to satisfy any anti nvidia rants, but to highlight the BS that people are talking when they start banging on about quality and premium.

With it coming from a review site gives it a lot more authority than some one on these forums claiming the same. They'd just get labled a fanboy and told to move on.

Yet it's perfectly acceptible to state the same but in favour of nVidia. How bizarre!

Waste of time because its just a snapshot in a fast moving world and has absolutely no worth after a relatively short period of time. Not to mention theres so many variables that you can't compare the results to any other setup - someone else could see the exact opposite results...

it was mildly interesting but I agree with rroff, it's a waste of a review really as Win7 is not even officially out yet. Wait til it's being shipped on PCs and sold in stores.

So surely you're also wasting your time responding to this thread and making observations that nVidia's drivers do have a fair few problems?

I guess it's worth mentioning I'm referring to Vista 64bit Ultimate.

Going back 6+ years ago, I did have the same problem of having to use different drivers for different games with my Elsa Gladiac Geforce II GTS as the releases were never good for all games, one thing was broken in one game or another.
