ATI Drivers

ATI cards are currently back in a state of "pants" again. Recently some changes were made to the ABI of the Linux kernel, and ATI have not yet released drivers to match the changes, but nVidia have.

However, the Open Source ATI drivers (xf86 radeon and radeonhd) are "not bad". I'm, unfortunately, using an ATI card on this machine and am using the radeonhd open source drivers. Not bad, but I can't do 3D.

Just a bump, what is the current state of ATI drivers? Any chaneg in the last few months or the same as the last 10 years?

I've had no issues with the propietary driver in linux for years with ATi, in ubuntu it's as simple as using the envy-ng script to get everything built automagically. About the only (minor issue) you can run into with compiz is resizing a window (it can get quite stuttery) because of the way pixmaps work and all the readbacks. 3D performance could be a bit better but ATi have never been that fond of OpenGL.

Well, I still have major issues with my Lenovo laptop which has an ATI FireGL card. Everytime I upgrade Ubuntu I spend a week trying to get hardware acceleration working, often without sucesss. I have 2 identical laptops setup with the same ubuntu, with 1 laptop the ATI driver works with the other, no.

I cannot accpet this. But if by some magic the ATI drivers for the 4870/50 are reasonable I might buy ATI. Although TBH, I think I might just get NVidia because I know it will be a safe choice.

I have a 4870x2 and everytime I try to get the proper ATI drivers running so I have some sort of 3D hardware acceleration I kill my install. I love my gfx card, it's great for gaming in windows, but an absolute bitch at the moment in linux.

The basic driver works okay as long as you don't want to do too much 3D or very high end video.

To be honest I try every couple of months to see if the situation has improved but no luck so far.

Re-installed Ubunty Jaunty on here last night, d/led the Catalyst 9.9 driver package from ATi and installed it. Compiz works, general video playback seems okay. But can I get the right refresh rate working on my monitor (75Hz), a perfectly simple task when using an nVidia card?

Can I ****.

:)

Interesting....

Finally got my MS wheel and pedals to calibrate properly in Ubuntu (cacked install of jscalibrator it seems, reinstalled it and re-cal'ed, works perfectly once more). Using the OpenGL V2 rasteriser on Grand Prix Legends with 1280x1024 res, I'm actually getting halfway decent performance with the Catalyst Linux driver package. Took a '66 Ferrari 246 around the new Targa Florio track for a spin or twelve, and got a solid 36fps (haven't tried it with the 60fps patch yet). NASCAR Racing 2003 mostly works as well, aside from the bottom of the menus getting cut off. Think I may need to run NASCAR windowed and slightly lower on the resolution (say, 1024x768) to sort the menus and get the frame rate up a bit, but for the most part I've got simracing in Linux with an ATi card at last!

Carmageddon 2 also works very speedily with a Glide wrapper in place, but still has the same graphical, menu and text corruption that I get in Windows with it these days.
