Wtf is going on? I've been trying to find a decent 2GB 6950 reference card design for the past 3hrs and I'm getting no where, they're virtually all on pre-order.

I'm basically after a card so I can slap a waterblock on the sod, so I'll need a reference design card for starters. I've been hunting around since yesterday and found one Asus 2GB one in stock at another retailer, only to be told that it is actually out of stock during the payment phase.

The manufcturers have now moved on to their own card designs and will have stopped producing reference design cards.

To be honest, it's sometimes not even that easy to find non-reference cards from most manufacturers (MSI come to mind).

I was thinking exactly the same thing the other day when I wanted to by a 6950.

Not many retailers other than OcUK had any stock.

On the EK website there is a compatibility checker. It's usually a good way to tell if your card is reference or not. EK have also produced a non-reference 6900 series block that works with many of the non-reference cards (but not my one, grrrrr)

ya I assume you want a reference so you can unlock it ... like the previous poster said. Suppliers are doing their own thing now which includes often a locked gpu.

Does anyone know if the following 6950 from XFX is a reference unit? Google images shows an AMD logo above the card slot, so I hope so.

I wouldn't count on it.

Someone bought one of the XFX cards thinking it was a reference card and would unlock.

They received one of these:

What the PCB is like under the cooler I don't know.

Sigh :/ Cheers for that. I need the card for a watercooled PC, and I just don't want a great ugly fat stock cooler on the thing for starters.

Someone at another retailer told me that the Americans are buying them all for bit-mining and the 6950/6970 isparticulaly good for this purpose. (Haven't s clue what it is)

There is an edit button.

Cheers guys. Decided to opt for 2GB Powercolour 6970 instead, which from reviews and the manufacturer's card code is a ref design. Cba to play the waiting game waiting for a 6950.

Got it arriving today. Just need to make sure that the EK gpu block that I want, will fit on this. It should do.
