Well I am looking for a new card.

I've always had Nvidia and BFG customer service is spot on so my gut is telling me to go Nvidia. But all I can see on the forum is ATI ATI ATI?

Whats happened?

19" monitor at 1440 x 900 and only play CS:S.

ATi is the cheaper of the two, and already has their next gen cards out, so their DX10 cards are even cheaper than they were

NVidia are far from releasing their Fermi lineup, so their cards are the same price as ATI's DX11 range

That's all there is to it

If you're looking for a new card for CS:S I'd go no higher spec than the GTS250 (9800GT)

4850 would be fine, even a a 4830 will do. Don't forget CS:S is CPU based. Saying that with my old E8400 and a 4850 @ 1680x1050, max settings I got like 340FPS in the stress test.

Barely see it drop below 100.

I don't really want to scrimp on the card because I don't want to have to upgrade it to play any games that I may decide to, even though I probably won't, just peace of mind really.

Its all ATi as Nvidia have pulled out till they get their next gen card out (Fermi), which could be end of the year, sometime next, as they just can't compete anymore, so had to pull all their cards, as the only way to sell them would be to lower the prices, but that would mean taking a loss on every one (as they old gen Dx10, where as ATi's on Dx11 now, and they faster and cheaper than em), so they cutting their losses and have canned 260/275/285, ATi's well owning em :D :D :D :D

I think it's fair to say that it's probably just a hitch. As long as the company survives then all the positions could change next year and then again the year after...

If you keeping it for a while(18 months or more) might be worth looking at 5*** card for dx11 or wait until nvidia has dx11 cards out, what card you pick will depend on spec of pc and res you play at.
If you not bothered with dx11 now or in the future then ati or nvidia will do.

get an ati 4850

Just looked up CS:S benchmarks for the 9800GT you already have and it confirmed my suspicions - you'd be getting well over 100 fps already.

Probably being a bit of a wet blanket, but it certainly would be spending money for the sake of it if CS:S is really all you play.

If you only play CSS then there's not any point in upgrading.

Your 9800 GT should handle it fine at 1440 x 900, don't upgrade for the sake of it.

If you want to upgrade something then upgrade the monitor.

Well I have everything on low and get 375ish fps in the video stress test in cs:s. BUT, in a match, it will drop below 100 on occasions. Moneys not an issue, i just fancy a guaranteed constant fps...

Whats wrong with my monitor - 19" Samsung T190 LCD Monitor 2ms- Only bought it this time last year and seemed the quickest response time going.

Clock the cpu as much as is possible and the game will run even more crisp and tighter than before. Mind you, it should be running pretty darn good at 3.6 which I see is what you've got it set to atm. Perhaps consider a new monitor. Then, then that would be a good enough reason to upgrade the GPU.:)
