ATI Unstable?

Okay guys, a few weeks ago I was advised to forego a gaming lifetime of allegiance to Nvidia GPU's.

I've never understood the mentality of a statement such as this, as i have no allegiance to Nvidia or ATI, i want the best price vs performance, whether that be Nvidia or ATI. ;)

Fair enough, but I didn't sign up for editing the registry

I have always believed Nvidia to be the best for FPS games becuase they tended to send more of their programmers / designers into game developing houses such as DICE etc.

These Nvidia developers worked with the game designers to help ensure they got the most out of the current GPU's supplied by Nvidia and that the drivers and the card worked well the game.

ATI historically have done this far less but have recently realised it is the way forward and are catching up as regards the amount of their people going into these game development houses and working with them.

Realising ATI were upping their game was one of the things I considered when buying this card as I wanted the best compatibility possible.

Also in the past my fellow clan mates have been crashing and burning left right and center, most of the time they were the ones using ATI cards.
My Nvidia GPU using clan mates had far less problems on average.

This is why I had allegiance to NVidia :)

As regards this, I'm assuming you are stating your surprise at my opinion that I shouldn't need to be adjusting my registry to make a GPU work

It is my opinion just as your surprise and reaction to it is yours.

Again, in my opinion, you are entitled to your opinion as am I, as long as it doesn't get personal

That said, the post whilst sharing your opinion, which is nice, again wasn't really that constructive and wasn't what I was asking for.

I was asking if anybody else was having trouble with this card and had any idea what was going on, but thanks for sharing :)

get the gtx590. You've already had your questions answered and you've been given a possible solution which you refuse to try. i would suggest that perhaps you had already made your mind up before posting this thread. any procrastination now is a complete waste of everyone's time so do the right thing and get rid of the 6990.

I detect barbs in your replys OP, if you come back here telling us a 590 works perfectly in your system you have done nothing but tell us you swaped a faulty card for a non faulty card :/

It is more Nvidia could afford to pay developers to optimise games for their cards ;) Now the playing field is levelling in terms of financial means.

Did you properly remove all the Nvidia drivers?

AMD/ATI cards are fine, the last major issues I've had with GPUs have both been nVidia - 8400M GS in my laptop died due to NVs inability to make laptop chips that work properly and a 4400Ti which literally caught fire

I'm calling PICNIC

Yeh mate, I formatted the hard drive and did a fresh install for the operating system and drivers.

the 6990 is just crossfire on a stick so to speak, it might be worth editing the reg and change the enableulps to 0

Hi old gamer. I have just been looking into this and if I understand it correctly this disables the "Ultra low power feature" or ulp.

This feature if I am correct puts the second card into low power mode during periods of low activity and we are looking to keep the 2nd card on full power by disabling this feature.

How does this stop me getting a blue screen and black flashing screens during game?

I am genuinely considering this but haven't found any evidence to suggest it fixes my problem.

Does it fix BSOD crashes etc?

im no expert on the subject but i did once try 6850 crossfire and got bsod every time i launched a 3d app and ive now crossfired a 6970 with a 6950, this ran ok untill it tried overclocking and this also gave me the bsod so i rememberd about the enableulps so i ran regedit and found 9 different folders with enableulps and these were for all my cards past and present from 5770,6800 and 6900 so i changed all the enableulps settings in the 6900 folders to 0, ive just checked in ccc and the second card which is the 6970 is idle with the clocks down to 250/150, and that is with 3 screens so all as it should be, the cards now overclock and run like a dream

All ways had ATI cards and never had any issues. There will be 50 people who say Nvidia are better then 50 who say ATI work better.

ditto,
as a single card user i can honestly say the great ati cards has been nothing but ultra stable for me. :)

I've tried a overclock today on my 5870 chore setup and got the BSOD while running 3Dmark 11!! What's this regedit that everyone's talking about?? I've only ever had my 5870 plugged in since the fresh install...

Okay, I did this earlier this evening and since 7.00pm have been gaming solidly.
I have had no BSOD

However the flashing black screen and graphical glitches in the form of the grass textures in game flashing remains.

Seems to be an improvement, so thanks for that but not there yet :)

I entirely agree. Like everyone, I can only really form my opinions on my personal experience.

I am not saying my opinion is correct indeed I bought this card becuase I keep an open mind and I am willing to try new things.

But my experience so far has only re-inforced my original belief.

At the end of the day it doesn't matter which card is better all that matters is that as individuals we are happy with our choice and its performance.

At the moment, I am not happy with my choice :D
