Do ATI's Linux drivers still suck?

Most people seem to prefer Nvidia cards on Linux for better driver support.

I've been using ATI for the past couple of years in Windows, (and really like them) but am looking to use Linux more in the future and would like some decent graphics support.

My next video card upgrade might be Nvidia if they prove to still be the better choice for Linux.

Cheers for your input. :)

Well i havn't tried Nvidia in linux but just before christmas i was running ATI on a linux and it really did suck but i have heard they have improved a lot on there drivers since christmas so i think it is worth the shot.

always go nvidia if you're thinking about linux. ati's support is really improving though, i'm just bitter because my card doesnt work. they've actually employed a team to work on linux driver support, so it will only get better.

If you have the choice, Nvidia defo. I've been quite lucky with my X700 pro but my next card will be NVidia purely for fact that Nvidia produce far better quality drivers on Linux.

Hmmm, looks like I'll probably be heading more for the 7900GT over the X1800XT then. :)

Does Nvidia's TV out work well in Linux for movie watching?

I used to get black borders on screen in Windows on my GF4, although I think it was more to do with the chip they used.

ATI's Linux support is utterly useless. It's been 5/6 months since the X1xxx series have been available and still no driver support (not even 2d). The supposed dedicated ATI linux driver teams response to this? They're coming but it will be a while.

ATI are far to comfortable in Microsofts bed at the moment to care I feel.
