which is better out of the two?

i understand there will be fan boys of either but i would like an unbias opinion as i was going to buy an ati sapphire 6970 2gb but an now unsure

many thanks

ATI are now AMD but in any case look at some benches, reviews and the contents of your wallet and buy the best you can justify the money for. 5850 is still a class card

When it comes to GPUs I've generally found sticking with what you know works best tbh - I commonly see the most issues when people swap from one vendor to another.

i thought as much, i went from a sapphire 5770 to the 5850 so i think if i do upgrade i will go for the 6970

cheers buddy

Unless the Vram on the card you have now is an issue i would hold out until the next series.

Or just make sure its a worthwhile upgrade.

I have always used ati/AMD but with the driver issues I had installing my 6850 i will be considering nvidia as well as amd next time I update.
Though at the moment the cheap prices of AMD quad cores are great for me as I dont really need the extra power and I can save myself a bundle :)

it should really depend on your budget and your needs.
no point buying a card if it doesnt meet your needs.

I prefer AMD for gaming in current gen, cuz 6950 2GB is at the sweet spot of die size, gpu performance, vram size, power consumption and price.

GTX 560 Ti 1GB is essentially the same as HD 5870 1GB released in 2009 - pretty similar performance and power consumption.

You get (slightly) less driver problems from nVidia, e.g. you don't have to worry about BSOD while updating drivers causing warnings for all subsequent attemps of driver installation.

Also it's wise to always do a fresh install if switching from one vendor to the other to avoid driver clash. I've used both and in all honesty I've had no problems with single ard use but when it comes to crossfire and SLI they both have similiar and their own issues during gaming and normal use (stuttering, idle clocks, flickering etc).

I've had more ATi / AMD cards than nVidia and have not had what I would call 'real' problems with either, niggles yes, but nothing that I couldn't sort or that wasn't of any real significance. I slightly prefer ATi / AMD's desktop image quality, the lower power draw associated with their tech, and also the prices. ;) On the other hand I prefer nVidia's performance, particularly concerning minimum and average frame rates, as well as the lack of performance sacrifice when AA is applied. I guess they simply have different approaches / priorities regarding their business.
