ATI x1950 Pro crashes

Hmm try 6.11 drivers, i hear there the best for this card.

try the 6.11 with ATT as they are the best out for this card at the moment. :)
where are you getting this information from? I've been using Cat 6.12 for a week or two and they seem fine?

Maybe...just that the box seemed to have been opened when I received it. As well as the 'missing' bits, the cellophane was ripped, and the card was just placed on foam (not in an anti-static bag). Don't even know if they're normally shipped in an anti-static bag, just that I'm yet to receive a component that wasn't

they should be in abag sounds very suspect to me m8.
The HIS X1950Pro should be in a sealed cellophane box, but the card doesn't come in a silver-wrap but instead just sits ontop a piece of pink foam. It does come with 2x DVI-VGA dongles and several CD's so something does seem amiss there?

My first HIS card had a defective 'rattle' fan but the second one works as advertised (i.e virtually silent! ) so thats having to go back. No matter what the make/brand of card there is always the chance of recieving a 'minger', I've had brand new cards arrive DOA before, **** happens!

I will have another read of this thread to see if there is something obvious that may be a problem, failing that sounds like maybe there is a problem with the card, but its good to be 'triple' sure its faulty before u RMA . . .

Is there anyway you can test the card in a different machine?

Thanks for posting big.wayne.

I've tried a few times now running the GPU 'stress test' in ATI tools, I manage about 2 minutes before the system locks up, screen goes black and monitor powers down with 'no display'. Surely this rules out anything other than a faulty card?

I've been doing some google searching, and it seems that the card is having issues with overheating VRAM chips. Fine under no load, but can't handle any serious load. For instance - the card worked ok for 10 minutes playing the original Call of Duty, which isn't graphically intensive. But two minutes of N4S Carbon, or the ATI TT tester, and it can't handle it.

Assuming I do RMA the card tomorrow, I'm unsure of whether to ask for a direct replacement. Would another identical card be likely to have the same issues, or is it just luck of the draw. I guess that's a tough question to answer :)

EDIT: My guess at the issue of missing accessories and an opened box, is that another customer has returned the card to OCUK as faulty, and the testers failed to pick up (perhaps from bad info from the original customer) that the card only has problems under load, and certifying the card as OK for resale. Could be way off here, but that seems logical.

As soon as I heard no static bag, I thought RMA. I can't imagine any retailor would intentionally sell a graphics card as new without an anti static bag. The rest of the missing accessories re-inforces this.

RMA it, imho.

Yeah does sound fishy as i have never seen a gfx card sold without one.
The HIS card 'doesn't' come wrapped in an anti-static bag.

Guess it might be worth ringing OC Tech support about the whole thing.

my HIS was NOT in a big, box was sealed amd so was everything in it, except the card , but the card is lodged inside a plastic bit so well away from everything

You can see the actual graphics card through the side of the HIS box, I didn't think twice about it as the card seemed to be resting on a soft pink cushion and was held in place by the plastic carton (which is inside a cardboard box).

Regardless of this, sounds like the box had been already opened?

Box wasn't sealed either - but I guess that's neither here nor there - I wouldn't be complaining if the card worked!

I'll get on to the tech support guys in the morning. Thanks for all your advice folks.

An update:

Spoke to OCUK tech this morning, who agreed with me about the problems the HIS version of the card is having with cooling the VRMs. He suggested that users with smaller cases, and hence more 'focussed' air flow - in addition to those with side intake fans - kept the VRMs cool enough to run.

Anyway, I've returned the card for a refund, and am going to order the Power Cooler version of the x1950 Pro (that has the arctic cooling system) on his suggestion.

Thanks again guys

Dude, its just one screw? I'm sure they wouldn't shaft you over on a £130 card for the sake of a little screw? If it's faulty, its faulty, RMA!

btw....i was gonna order the HIS version today, then coincidentally i saw this post. Having 2nd thoughts now big time. Might just go cheaper and get the OCUK 7900GS. That'll do me till DX10 cards drop to realistic prices. :)

i would have thought they would just say that sincae i removed the stock heatsink that has vioded the warranty? if not i will retun it

Hmm if you replaced the hsf then that will be a problem. Unless you still have the original hsf and can get it back on when RMA it and make sure it is exactly how it looked when first bought.
