anyone care to fill me in on this card?

just a base 12 pipeline x800 how will this run on an a64 system ????

bear in mind i'm moving from a ti4200 beast lol

ignore this guy here he's obviously a fanboy of nvidia. I have a x800gto 256mb card with 16pipelines. It runs anything i throw at it so far reasonably well. Its a big upgrade from a Ti4200 and for a midrange card they are excellent. They might not have SM3.0 but if your after better framerates got for the x800, but if your after extras such as sm 3.0 go for a 6600 or 6800 depending on your budget.

If you still cant make up your mind, read some reviews on the x800.

It's a much, much better card than a 4200 every day of the week. Will play all the latest game but no where near as well as the very latest video cards. I only play BF2 and it copes perfectly with that game at 1024x768.
It will all depend on the price of course with all the more powerful cards around at the moment.

This is my x800 12 pipeline card with paired with my AMD Opteron.

crap card, no shader model 3.0, not much of an upgrade. better off with a 6600gt or 6800nu

Yeh because that makes sense  Course its a bloody upgrade, SM3 doesnt make the whole lot run faster does it?

Why buy a 6600GT or 6800NU, that are both slower, just to get shader model 3? He's going from a ti4200 so why would SM3 be on the top of his list?

X800 = way to go

Yeah, go for the 6800NU why? Because of SM3.0 of course! I mean.. Who wouldn't want to reap the benefits of being able to run FarCry with HDR? and the framerate would be so low that you wouldn't have it on anyway.

And in case you didn't realise, I'm being sarcastic.. Like Benjo said. I'm sure SM3.0 isn't at the top of the OP's list, as it shouldn't be.

Go for the X800 :o

I picked up one of the 128mb ones cheaply from here and it matches my old AGP 6800NU even though the mem is only running @ 800mhz (core 440) so they are far from bad cards. At this level of card SM3.0 isnt essential as they don't really have the grunt to use it to good effect.

my old 6800nu used shader model 3.0 quite well and farcry was more than playable with all detailes turned on with HDR at 1152x864.

up to you though, in this day and age newer technology prevails.

if you were on pci-e i would recommend you to either get a 7300gt, 7600gt, x1800xt or x1900xt in that order of power/price. the best bet would be the x1800xt if your budget would allow.

so how would that make me a nvidia fanboy?

i just state the facts about the technology and features available. x800 would be a mistake, luckily its a mistake I don't have to live with.

Agree totally.

Why go for something thats old tech when you can have something thats around the same price and better?

The 6600gt would be a more sensible choice than an x800xl, depending on the price. they are about the same in performance. If it were an x800gto2 than id say the gto2 no question, but it isnt. And when we are comparing cards of roughly the same speed, the one with the better features wins it for me - and that's the 6600gt.

http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm05=1575750 - that's about 2,000 points short what i got with my 16 pipe gto2 - 6,868

http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=8863347 - ~5k short - 32,394

just to give an idea of performance

yea the 6600gt has its other advantage, a working video processor. in this day and age when hd video is taking off the resale value of a 6600gt will eventually end up higher than that of the 6800le/nu.

you sure you mean the x800xl james.miller? by the looks of things the only game they are close in is doom 3 with the x800xl being up to 120% faster in some games at certain resolutions and at least 20% faster at any res (or game, bar doom 3)

The rolleyes aimed at me or you? :p

If me then I can get a few reviews for you to show what I mean.

its obviously aimed at me  <---- that one was for you:p lol

yep the xl is faster than a 6600gt. with differences that large (what the hell was i thinking of??) then i wouldnt worry about sm3.0. i didn't when i bought the x800gto2, and i didnt regret it when i sold my gto2.

I would'nt worry about SM3.0 either, theres hardly bugger all using it, and its been around for years, started with the 6 series, yes it is that old, i know for the amount of games out using it that you would think SM3.0 has just come out but nope its years old as said, and besides SM3.0 is old tech, SM4.0 is coming now. :p

Dont base the purchase of a card on one useless feature.
