Sic said:so, you think it's logical to prejudge a person purely because of their appearance? why is this so unacceptable with racism, but it's fine when you're winding up an emo kid? i'm not saying people can't have an opinion, but the original post attempts to label all emo kids as whiney, poetry-writing, self-mutilators. would you agree that this is an accurate assumption, or the BS rant of some narrow-minded, ill-educated (not scholastically, before someone picks a hole in that) individual?
surely you know that someone's personality doesnt instantly change because they put on a pair of tight jeans!?
i'm not having a go at people who have a different opinion to mine, because their opinion is on a totally different gradient to me, and i think it's unacceptable to hate/reject a person/group of people based on their opinion. now, if you advocate racism in any form, let me know so i know where i stand with you on this debate
Balddog said:Its nothing at all like racism...Emo is a choice...These people choose to listen to that kind of music, they choose to dress in that way, they choose to act in that way, they choose to portray this particular image. Equating a dislike of a particular social trend to racism is extremely insulting to those who have experienced racism and is more than a little arrogant.
Sic said:so, you think given the choice, a person who's been subject to racism would choose to change their skin colour/nationality?
as you've implied before, we're going to differ on this issue, and i've got no intention to change it. if what you've read into what i've said is insulting, that's your problem...but you can't deny that the unjustified hate/resent of an entire group because of what they stand for and what they look like more than closely resembles racism!
A good point. I hereby apologise to all of the fingerless mentally disabled people who were offended by my comments.VIRII said:I did, but then I would not stoop to making a joke at the expense of physically or mentally disabled people to try and show how witty I am.
Balddog said:Well you rolled your eyes...that doesnt usually imply a positive meaning..
If you dress in an extreme fringe style, then no, youre not normal. Maybe its the wording you have a problem with...Would unusual be better?
Sic said:i wouldn't want people prejudging me based on the clothes i feel comfortable in, and making assumptions on ridiculous potential aspects of my personality based on my hair colour and whether i part it at the side. surely all the ****-takers can see why this is SO retarded?

SidewinderINC said:i have a biiig problem with the word "normal" becuase to be called not normal i find very offensive, but if i was called different then it assumes people are on a level plane.
for somebody to say to me "i'm normal, you're not normal" i would be offended, as it infers that they are portraying themselves on a higher level to me.
if they said "you're different to me" its fine.
SidewinderINC said:i guess its just my take on the word "normal", and how in many instances being abnormal is a bad thing.
VIRII said:Being normal would indicate conforming to the largest social stereotype in the broadest terms.
Well don't people with statistically normal personality types want to conform and therefore dress to conform. Whereas the abnormal personality types either deliberately aim not to conform or don't really care about conforming?SidewinderINC said:being told i dont dress normally would suit me down to a tee, i'd happily accept that, but being told straight up that i'm not normal wouldnt - because that indicates personally being abnormal too.
SidewinderINC said:i'd say i'm quite a straight up person, i listen to heavy metal yes, but i wouldnt say i'm a "mettaler" in any sense of the term. but again having said that about 70% of my wardrobe is black...

in all honesty i dont particular care when people shout out goth or what have you, but if somebody came up to me and told me i wasnt normal it would be rather cutting (but not me cutting myself, thats too emo)
It'll serve two purposes, firstly it'll stop people being able to bother you and it'll make it harder to cut yourself
