ATX3.0 psu’s and coil whine

Yeah, just the dust to worry about!

I've got a McGiver setup at the minute. Built in an NR200 with no panels on and an ATX PSU powering the lot through the sides!
I've been using the wife's hair dryer to dust all my parts when needed lol! Saves me buying one of those expensive computer duster thingies!

That's proper jank! I like it

I've commented in other threads about how I don't hear any coil whine. In a recent Hardware Unboxed video they said that a PC that whined in one place did not whine in another, so I wonder if mains power quality is an issue. Thus my question: does anyone who is hearing coil whine use an in-line UPS as I do?

I don't but since you mentioned that im tempted to buy one to try and see if it reduces or cancels the noise.

For a 12700k and 3090 (future 4090) what UPS would you recommend?

So straight to the point, i’ve tried 2 SFX-L Asus Loki PSU’s so far and both exhibited Electrical buzzing and Coil Whine, quite extreme as well to the point of being irritating. From what i know these are the Seasonic OEM’s Edit: spoke to someone else and i am now told that the 850w variants are made by Great wall! It would be great if someone could confirm this.

I’m wondering if any of you who have had Atx 3.0 psu’s had the same issues?

Just to clarify, the whine only happens during GPU load, whether gaming or gpu stress testing. Cpu intensive loads had no whine and idle is also fine.

My system specs are:

12700K
Asus ROG Z690-I itx board
RTX 3090 Palit gaming
Couple of SSD’s and Nvme drives

I have had the same sort of issue with two Thermaltake 850 SFX PSU's with no gpu even installed just on the desktop if open chrome and move the window around it whines.

I think they are the same OEM's, i'm sure i listed that somewhere.

Having used my Loki for a few months now, the whining has definitely dropped and its much less noticeable. Maybe partly due to me getting used to it somewhat too but it's definitely not as loud. The gpu seems to have pretty much gone silent too compared to initially when i first installed the PSU.

What UPS are you running? I'm looking for one for my 4090 and 5800x3d, either an Eaton Eclipse Pro 1600VA or an APC 1500VA.

!!!!! I also have the loki 1000 and the buzzing noise is loud! Thought I was the only one experiencing this, had it for a few days now and it was on and off, couldn't put my finger on it untill today I installed pubg and the menu has unlimited fps so it pushes the gpu to 100% 5/600fps, everytime I load up the game it squeals! Not quite sure what to do now. Might change my nr200p case and get something that'll fit an ATX psu. Or could it be the single 600w cable? Has anyone tested?

Also, would it be worth an RMA? Or are they all like this..

RMA'd it will be sending it back tomorrow.

I have a really good (almost silent) 4090. I recently upgraded to a atx 3.0 PSU. As expected noise level remained the same.

With 40 series cards it's over 99% odds it's just the GPU itself. Plenty of good reasons to upgrade to a ATX 3.0 power supply but reducing coil whine isn't one of them.

Yes can confirm it isn't the PSU, I've cancelled my RMA. Took the PSU out of the case and left everything plugged in so I can hear it better, it's definitely coming from the GPU. Hmm so it can't be an issue with the ATX 3.0 cables or a PSU issue seen as it didn't help the coil whine then.

Edit: just seen Optimum Tech's coil whine YouTube video and the last few AMD cards is what mine sounds like, pretty loud and annoying. In two minds whether to RMA it and try my luck. Going to see if I can live with it/try to ignore it for abit and go from there.

Well I went through a fair few 4090s to get a quiet/silent card. Was a massive headache but boy it makes a difference to me when I play a game. You could try undervolting it, but if it bothers you just RMA it :)

Yh might undervolt it today, and I heard if you use it constantly at high loads for a few weeks to let the inductors settle in, it should reduce the coil whine? Well I'm in no rush to RMA anything now so I'll see how it goes lol

I've tested with both cables on my 3090 and it made little difference tbh.

My experience now though after a few months of use and "breaking in" the noise has more or less disappeared to the point where i dont hear it unless i put my ear right up against the psu.

I ordered a Seasonic Vertex GX 1200 today, looks like a good unit with some good reviews. Hoping for no/minimal coil noise but we will see…
