After looking round at others phones im now back at the bloody iPhone lol!

The contracts are **** so im NOT going down that route... yet.

I was thinking £250 for 8Gb off the bay and then a nice Sim only from T-Mobile with 350 mins and 650 texts for £15!!! then bolt on internet for £7.50 makes it a lovely deal...

But how hardy are the phones? Im worried about it breaking and £250 down the drain aint fun...

Im waiting until the 11th for everything to "settle down" information wise as I doubt there will be *any* 3G ones about

But yea, opinions?

There will be 3G ones available after the launch hype. You have to look at it from the point of view of O2, it's in their interest to sell all their hardware stock with contracts because they make more money in the long run. When the market becomes saturated with the new 3G phones and there is excess stock they will start selling them on PAYG.

Even then they are not going to be cheap and you may find that if you keep the phone and contract for 18 months that the price difference is minimal.

(£15 Contract + £7.50 Data) * 18 (Contract Length) + £299 (Possible 8GB PAYG Price) = £704

£35 Contract * 18 (Contract Length) + £99 Phone = £729

Or

£99 Phone + Ziphone = £99 Phone :)

You cant get the phone for 99 pounds anymore as you have to sign a contact like any other normal high end phone....

Serriously where have you been for the last month ?

So £99 iPhone + Ziphone + Contract (18x35) = £729 as stated above.

Your proposed option (8GB iPhone EDGE)
((15 + 7.5) * 18) + 250 = £655

Official iPhone 3G option: (8GB iPhone 3G)
(35 * 18) + 99 = £730 (+£75)

Official iPhone 3G option: (16GB iPhone 3G)
(35 * 18) + 159 = £789 (+£134)

It's not a huge saving when you factor in the unlimited browsing, The Cloud hotspots and the added stuff with 3G.

Also, it will "just work" and will be less hassle / headache to use as it won't need unlocking everytime an update is launched :)

Not to mention the ones on eBay are either a) second hand or b) going for insane prices or c) sold by scammers or d) all of the previous

Even if they manage to unlock the iPhone 3G sooner rather than later, until the PAYG come out they're going to be stupidly expensive.

The cheapest possible CTO for the 8GB & 16GB iPhone 3G are £639 & £699, even without a profit margin on top that's silly money.

My old iPhone is now unlocked and ready to be thrown on the bay, tbqfh I'd be chuffed to get £250 for it :o

Got my 2G iPhone on the bay at the moment. I do think the 3G model may have some new components which make it harder to unlock.

Thing is I get free wifi anyway as im part of the BT Openzone thingy, so that counts for nothing.

I won't be browsing that much anyway and I use more texts than the contract allows ~ 600 and over the last 18 months i've used 140 mins...

So basically its £20 of stuff which is totally and utterly a waste of money :(

Edit: the £7.50 bolt on I don't think i'd select, instead just do the £1 a day thing if and when I needed mobile internet...

I'm not disputing that.

Just pointing out that the iPhone price wasn't far off you're proposed price :)

Whatever suits your needs, you buy.

All I can say is be very careful as I got stung for £155 there was some real small print I managed to miss in the excitement of buying an iPhone after looking for weeks.........

Still fighting with PP over it too :(

Just though I would give those words of advise...
