Audi a3 brake grinding..

Audi a3 came for its pads changing the otherday as she there was a grinding noise from the front at low speeds so the owner thought the pads were an issue. Ive changed the pads (as they were low / 2mm) and the noise remains, what baffles me is that it only happens sometimes at very low braking speed, say 10mph and below...

- if you brake heavy from a decent speed (say 60) and come to a stop it doesnt grind
-if you brake from 10mph to a stop it will grind, but only sopmetimes, say a 1/3 of the time.

the grinding is very loud, such as what youd get when there would be no pad material and its touching the disc. Ive also checked the brake dust shields and they're not catching the disc either. There is also no excessive lip on the discs...

any help is good.

discs are in good condition, no lips etc, heat shields seem secure, theres no bearing play in the hubs.

im baffled, especially as its only from low speeds and only sometimes

The ABS rings are a bit **** on most vags - could one be broken and the noise be the anti lock system throwing a bit of a fit?

I had something similar on my old 8L a3, the ABS light wouldn't come on and nothing was felt through the pedal but it made an odd grinding noise as that particular wheel went into on/off mode. it didn't happen under hard braking only light stops - The car pulled noticeably when this happened as you would expect, I only discovered when i stripped it back down that the ring was the issue.
