Hi all,

I am strongly considering coming out of my company car scheme and buying a nice car.

A few background details....

- family of 4 - kids are 4 and 7.
- we have a 2nd car which we will be replacing next year which will be something like an older mondeo or similar with enough room for luggage, dump runs etc. So the new car needs to be able to fit 4 people, but extra space isn't too important.
- 12k available to spend
- will be replacing a 59 plate Insignia 2ltr diesel turbo (160bhp)
- not after something hugely powerful, but something on par with the insignia would be nice.
- ~10k mileage a year

I have been looking at the Audi A4 cabriolet, which the mrs has fallen in love with. She has always wanted a cab, so now would be a good time I think, as we have the money available.

Any recommendations?

Is there a site I can see the fuel cost difference between the 2.0 and the 3.2 over 10k miles?

I drove a V6 and felt it was a bit ****, typically Audi V6 meaning thirsty yet not that fast. Turbo petrol probably best.

From a performance/mpg point of view, yes.

In terms of it being a petrol cabriolet that you want to hear, the V6 wins every time. I'd never bother with the V6 in saloon form of the A4, but in the 'vert it just makes sense.

An S4 cabriolet would be well within budget, so I'd look at spending significantly less than your £12k budget on a standard A4 cabrio. However it would definitely have to be a petrol, and most likely the 2.0T or 3.0 if you're only doing 10k a year.

4.2 litre, think thats going to be pushing the limit of my insurance! The 3.2 litre quattro came out at about £900.

edit: not as bad as I was thinking.... 1k for the 4.2l. That's doable. Next question though.... running costs?

this is gorgeous though http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/4057551.htm

Ha so you won't consider FASH 3.2s but your considering a 4.2 that's been damage recorded in some way

It's not gorgeous at all, it's an insurance writeoff being sold by somebody who hasn't yet discovered capital letters. It has 5 owners - 5! It's like an automotive game of pass the parcel, who will be left lumbered with it when the music stops :D

As much as I'd not touch that v-car registered, 5 previous owner example, there is nothing that stops it looking gorgeous (assuming you find the shape of the S4 "gorgeous") as a car.

Not forgetting the fact it only comes with 1 key. Who has the other? Seems like the typical **** head car that gets sold as soon as a bill more than £10 pops up.
