A golf GTi would have as much space as an A4, and better access to the boot as well with it being hatchback

I would completely disregard the 330i, and the V6 TT and Golf, the 2.0T engines are better all round...
 
Word of advice - I learnt the hard way. Do NOT buy a B7 2005 -early 2008 2.0Ltr Diesel especially the 170BHP models they have major issues and you WILL end up paying for them through the nose. Injectors, Oil balancing shaft if that goes you are looking £2k for repairs.

the 1.9s and 2.5/3.0ltr are fine, I will always rue the day I bought the above car but its a learning experience and I have stated in other threads I will never buy an Audi again.

Fair one, was going to suggest alternatives if you had said for practical reasons but if it's heart over head then go for it buddy - good luck finding the motor you want!
 
I have one.

If you don't do big miles honestly, buy a petrol. This engine isn't particularly economical anyway.

As Daff Duck says, you MAY get an expensive repair bill but I wouldn't really let that put you off buying what looks like a sound car. There are soooo many cars with these engines out there you are bound to get a lot reported issues.

What I would stay away from though is an automatic. They are CVT boxes and the older 6 plate boxes just aren't up to it and are expensive to repair. The newer 7 plate versions are better but still perhaps a risk.
 
Make sure you get one in white, with massive wheels, the least powerful diesel engine and S line spec with no options. Then drive around 3 feet from the car in front irrespective of speed or conditions.
 
to be fair my heart is set on an A4 but with all the suggestions flying around I have been looking at other cars, i am no doubt the most indecisive person lol and i do appreciate everyones contribution.

I have had a love affair with the style of audi's for years ever since i had a very old audi 80 loved how it drove, everything about it lol, my concern is with the 2.0 tdi models but as most of you say petrol is no doubt going to be the best option for my mileage, but who knows, it might come to the crunch and i'll buy something else :D then no doubt regret it haha
 
Audi's are not generally liked around here because most people are 'into' cars and place a proportionaly higher value on more subjective things like handling, steering feedback, etc etc wich Audi's are typically quite poor with but which most normal people don't really care about. The one thing Audi DO get right most of the time is styling. They are not excitingly styled cars, or brash, or cool but they DO look like premium saloons and I can understand the appeal this gives.

On that basis if the A4 is something you've wanted for a long time then I doubt a 3 Series is going to offer you so much more that it'll counter your long-held desire for an A4. And, subjective stuff driving enthusiasts care about aside, the A4 is hardly a bad car. Infact, objectively, its a very good car.

The 2.0TFSI is quite rare, however. I'd suggest you are looking at something like this:

£11k gets you almost to the cross-over point of the all-new model which was introduced in 2008. Your choice therefore is a mint, high specification high trim level previous shape model for under your budget, or a lower spec perhaps less tidy current shape car for just over your budget.

Do make sure to avoid the automatic 'Multitronic' models as these are notoriously unreliable.

thanks mate, i'll defo take all of that into consideration, i'd like to get as much bang for my buck so to speak so if it does mean a slightly older model i wouldn't be too fussed

what would the benefits be shifting to an A6?

I rarely have to hit the motorway these days but had reason to this morning as I had to do a 300 mile rush hour commute today to attend a meeting. The Audi A6 in its various guises was by far the most populous car I noticed. Are they popular company cars or something?

Audi went bonkers with crazy leasing deals on 2.0 TDI's these last few years.

A newer generation car. The A6 was released in 2004, whereas the older model A4's you've been seeing are a facelifted version of a car originally unveiled in late 2000. So, a more modern interior and electornics system.
