Hi all,

Just after some advice on what to look out for when inspecting the car,

Audi A5 2.0 TFSI S Line Multitronic 2dr 208 bhp
59 plate 49,650 miles
£11,750

Regards,

What a terrible gearbox that is. I just don't understand why Audi insist on fitting it to A5s, A6s and A7s when there is the vastly superior and much more reliable ZF8HP that they use in the A8 (and everyone else uses in everything).

Because the ZF8HP isn't compatible with FWD applications.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the multitronic box really isn't that bad in anything post-2008.

I went from an S tronic to a multitronic and never had any gripes.

They weren't reliable before, they are reliable now.

Some of those petrol Audis love to drink oil too..
So, that combined with the awful gearbox would make me think twice!

FWIW, I'm annoyed that all I could get with the 4-pot A6 was the Multitronic as the manual is getting annoying.

I didn't know that.
But aren't all Audi A4, A5, A6, and A7s longitudinal engines to allow for 4WD?

I suppose the only other things to lookout for is that the seals are good (the roof doesnt leak) and that there isnt water and a ton of dead leaves and gunk in the scuttle panel (where the battery is).

The multi tronic serves a purpose. It's nice for cruising about in but annoying when you want to give it the beans. I certainly wouldn't want to run one without a Audi warranty.

£11k is surely bottom end of the market for this car?

When you want to give the beans you either downshift or stick it in sport. Simples :)

I admit that it's not the best auto transmission in the world but it's really not as bad as the folks on this forum make out, a lot of which probably haven't tried it and have no doubt just heard/read horror stories of the previous generation boxes. It's absolutely fine for day to day driving and doing decent motorway mileage and S mode is fairly sharp and akin to S tronic. You could even leave it in S mode 90% of the time if you so pleased.

Yes you can 'downshift' but it's shocking. Nothing like a DSG.

Mainly because the CVT transmission doesn't actually have 'gears' as such. That's why if you floor it the revs just sit at a constant rpm.
