Audio Hardware/Software issue

Good Morning,

This is my first post here so please bear with me on this. Apologies if this is in the wrong area.

I don't believe that this issue is Audio hardware/software alone as I believe it goes deeper than that.

The Problem:
I use both Speakers and a Headset for my PC, switching between speakers for general purpse and Headset when I'm playing video games and on Discord, and recently I've been having sound issues when loading up certain games which requires me to restart my PC and or re-plug in my headset but most of the time it requires a restart.

The issue is that my headset audio starts to stutter at random intervals, and causes any game being played to lag. After a short while this issue causes my entire sound to cut out, nada, no discord sound and no in-game sound. However I am able to change to my speakers and have sound but no one wants to blast in-game sound through a microphone.

My Investigation:
This has been going on for months now and initially I put this down to something that hopefully might go away (how stupid) but recently it has been grinding at me.

After doing some investigating of my own I found something interesting. While this stuttering/cutting out was occuring I opened the sound control panel nd in the playback devices I notice there was a set of headphones (at least that what my computer calls them) that were appearing and disappearing in the list seperate to my actual headset but here's where it got interesting.

I managed to double click into this device and disabled it, but this caused my speakers to completely stop and this is where my confusion begins. I can stop the stuttering by disabling this "Phantom" device but it completely stops my speakers from working and my headphones working perfectly afterwards.

What confuses me even more is that fact that testing my default speakers device plays the testing sound but testing these "phantom" headphones doesn't play a sound and yet they are somehow connected?

What I've Tried:
I have tried the following -
  • Re-installing sound drivers for both my headset and speakers
  • Uninstalling the phantom headphones
  • A new set of Headphones other than my usual pair
  • A new set of Speakers other than my usual pair
And to no avail, the issue still occurs whether its with the same hardware or new hardware so that's why I believe it's not so much an Audio Hardware/Software issue but I could be wrong.

Can anyone shed any light on this? I'm sorry for what might seem like a poor explanation but unfortunately it's hard to put into words.

Any help much appreciated.

How are the speakers and headset connected to the PC? USB or 3.5mm jack on the motherboard/soundcard? If USB have you tried the solutions here? https://windowsreport.com/fix-windows-10-usb-headset-issues/

I will look through this link more thoroughly when I am at home, but it's interesting to see that there's a specific Razer issue on that list as my headset is a Razer Megalodon which is infact USB. I will go through these steps and report back as soon as possible.
