Audio missing when importing video into premier pro

Hello was hoping to get some advice about a problem I have.

I need to edit some video which was taken on a sony hard disk video camera. I don't know what settings the video was recorded on or the exact camera used. I have the footage and it is a .mpg file extension. Work I've done in the past has always been on .avi. When I import the video into Premier there is no audio showing when I drag it onto the timeline. The audio plays fine when I play it in media player or other video software but premier doesn't seem to like it.

Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Older versions of Premiere and most other editing programs don't like Mpeg audio, best thing to do is use a program like Super or other encoding software and convert the mpeg file to a DV AVI file, you'll then have no problems importing.

Another option would be to demux the Mpeg so you end up with a video and audio file, you can then convert the audio file to a .wav

Thanks for your help. I am using Premier Pro CS3, seems odd that it doesn't pick up the Audio. I downloaded Super and tried encoding the file to DV AVI which brought then showed the audio when I imported it into Premier. However it had changed the ratio of the video to 4:3 from 16:9

I tried different combinations of settings and outputs and nothing worked. Tried MPG II and that had the same problem I was originally having with no sound coming through.

I am testing it out with exporting just the audio using super and then importing that seperately into premier and matching it up with the video. I don't think its going to be very satisfactory because the audio file is a tiny bit shorter than the video in the time line so I'm worried that as the video goes on the lip movement will be out of time with the audio.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The aspect shouldn't be a problem, once the clip is in Premiere you can change the aspect by right clicking on the file and then clicking on interpret footage, you can then change the aspect ratio.
