Got a new headunit arriving tommorow, and I will need to remove the old one first. It's an old JVC unit and the manual says to use some handles, which I understand are keys used to pull it out. I don't have these keys as the radio came with the car and they weren't supplied.

Do I have to use these specific keys or is there another way? I would prefer not to have to purchase keys for one task.

It the original head unit sold with the car when new? if so what car?

Most the time you can get the head unit out without the keys but you have to be imaginative at times lol

It's an aftermarket JVC unit.

Is a flat bladed screwdriver likely to damage it, I would put this one back in when selling the car.

Most aftermarket units just need two thin bits of metal pushed down the sides.

Can sometimes do one side at a time, I rarely have the keys for removal when fitting new units.

***** option:

Go to Halfords, collect one of each type of key they sell, ask if you can try to see which one fits your radio. It's really easy to get the keys out without damaging the packaging. Go to car, extract radio, put keys back and complain that none of them fit.

Don't do this to a decent indie shop, but Halfrauds are fair game :)

Hehe, I might see if a mate (mechanic) has any.

Edit: actually thinking about it, would PCI slot cover plates do the trick? :D

No hacksaw blades lying around :(

How does it actually unclip the unit from the surround? - might help me understand what's gonna be suitable or not.

There will be two tabs that are pushed out into the cage locking it in place, all the keys do is push the two tabs back in and away from the cage, letting you slide it out.

The keys have hooks on them so you push them in and pull them out and they pull the HU out with them, but if you're using hacksaw blades you just release the clips with them and pull the head unit out with your hands instead.

That's what it's been like on all the HUs I've done anyway, I think it's panasonic and sony I've fiddled with but I think they're all pretty similar.

You fitted a head unit before?

There are normally clips on the cage that when the head unit is pushed back "spring" into place to stop you pulling it back out. When I say clips they are just two bits of metal on the cage bent inwards. When you push your keys in these push the metal outwards and away from the unit, enabling you to pull the unit out. Hard to explain for me lol

Much better example above lol
