Audiophile Myths

Yeah, I must apologize for not saying anything about the cable, I just didn't think about it as it is such a non issue for me. Personally, I have both the extension cable socket (for the STX) and the Aune T1 sat behind my keyboard for easy access to both sources and I find the coiled DT990 cable a lot less annoying than the straight cable on the K702's - that one I have to either just leave in a heap on the desk or try and loop it around something so that it doesn't droop down to the floor where it can get tangled in my computer chair's various bits.

I suppose, as you say, it's not an issue for people with the coiled cable versions, so it just doesn't come up. Kind of funny in a way, that the impedance rating is talked about, the differences between driving the 80 and 250Ω, but the cable is not mentioned. :p

Also, most pictures of the DT770, whichever version, don't show the cable. That doesn't help, because without looking at specs, or without being told, people without much experience of headphones probably just assume the cable is straight whatever the version.

Pretty much exactly what I did. I had watched a couple of unboxings and on one there was the coiled cable and the other a straight one. Obviously I should have cottoned on to the fact one video was for the 250 Ohm version and the other for the 80 Ohm (I didn't). Honestly though, when I saw it, I thought the cable might just be US only or something, what with the picture shown when I bought it not clearly showing the cable as being coiled.

I'm almost certainly going to exchange these for the 80 Ohm version at the very least because of the cable. I bought them from the forest place though and I (think) I get a 30 days money back guarantee, at least that's what it looks like.

Anyone know how that works? Is it only unopened goods, or? I know it has something to do with the distance selling regulations and not being able to physically see the product before purchasing (sorry mods if this type of discussion isn't allowed! :/).

If I can return it for a full refund within 30 days, I'm probably going to keep them at least for a couple of weeks to see if I get used to them. If I do I'll just exchange them for the 80 Ohm version, and if I don't, I dunno, I may look for something with bloated bass! These phones having accurate sound and 'dynamic' bass as another posted said is admirable, and I can appreciate that - but it really does seem to suck the fun out of my listening experience, if you understand what I mean?

Also, I found a really terrible copy of an album I have buried deep in one of my music libraries earlier. I think it's 192kbps or something lower maybe. Anyway, I also have a 320kbps copy of the same album. I couldn't tell the difference between the two. I swear.

Maybe my ears just don't work properly?

Haha

Sorry to hear you aren't getting full satisfaction out of your new purchases. It's so disappointing to buy something new and notice no difference. The coiled cable on the dt770's is so annoying! I full agree with you there.

But, I still think you should have went in smaller steps. If I was you now I would return the essence sound card and the 250 ohm dt 770's. Get the 80ohm version or even try a completely different headphone like the sennheiser 558. I would also get the creative Z sound card. I think you will be happier.

I don't thnk you will be dissapointed with the 80 Ohm version, they are very loud and have a lot of bass. I did think myself that with a Amp on my sound card maybe the 250 Ohm version may have been better but apparantley you need a lot more amps than most sound cards can offer. The 80 Ohm seem to be the most popular choice and have good reviews, however I only use them for gaming.

If the 250 ohm version doesn't have enough bass then neither will the 80 ohm. If bass is all that's important then he should be looking at something like the Sony MDR-XB700.

Yeah, I'm thinking the experiment is done and HiFi is not what the OP is looking for. At least the headphones can go back under DSR so all that's lost is the shipping.

Can't think of many headphones that do bass better then the 770. They are one of the only headphones that can mimic a movie theater or nightclub.

They also have an amazing soundstage and really likeable tone. If someone came up to me and told me the 770 lacked bass I would tell them to give me a toke on what they care smoking: )

If thay bloated type of bass is really your main priority then as said the XB700 is ok. XB500 would be even better, it's a terrible headphone, no mids and weird treble but the bass is ridiculous.

V Moda Crossfade LP will be more to your taste. good portable basshead phone, stylish with removable cables.

The 770 are amazing but if they are not meeting your needs after a good try with them the V Moda LP will have the exact bass you are after.

Shame.

Whilst I am on HD650s with an STX I just threw Stupify on myself and have huge grin on my face. The accuracy and intimacy of the subtleties of the track are so much more enjoyable than the bass! The absolute sharp crispness of cymbals etc

Even at that small increase , the sound should be night and day difference. I would ask for a hearing test . It could be a frequency range problem. Ive got slight frequency problems but can still pick the differences

OK guys, think I've found the problem. The quality of my library is too low.

On most of my metal albums the vocal are clear but everything else just sounded weak and quiet.

Just downloaded a FLAC version of Sickness by Disturbed. My oh my. Massive smile on my face while listening to this.

Vocals are crystal clear, and I can hear each individual instrument but nothing feels crowded out by anything else. Incredible! :D

I was enjoying it so much and the noise isolation is so good on these phones that my better half walked in on me getting a bit too into my air guitar routine without me noticing, haha.

Be right back, gotta redownload my entire library in FLAC format!

P.S. Still don't know what is up with the kbps number not seeming to relate to audio quality. I have a couple of downloaded Killswitch albums that are showing as 320 kbps in Musicbee that actually sound a lot worse than another I have that I ripped directly off the cd that is showing as 246kbps. Strange.

I take it your downloading pirate copies?

You cannot really trust them. People take crap files and up sample them, use crap decoders, encoders, crap software, etc.

Buy spotify premium and use http://www.fidelify.net/ for a month or so and see if you can tell the difference between that and your "dodgy" downloads

Told ya :D

Sonny has made a very good point about the quality, just because it says 320kbp or FLAC, doesn't mean it's a good copy as there are some numptys who find it funny to up-sample to make them look good. Originally most of my library was saved as 192kbp to 256kbp so that I could cram more onto my MP3 player but as I now do almost all of my listening off the PC I am slowly re-recording my whole collection as FLAC. I'm finding that visualisation is a lot more solid and precise.
Another thing you need to consider is that not all recordings are equal and some metal recordings are almost punkish in their crudity. The Disturbed albums are well produced though and it shows in how clean they sound.

If you're recording your own CDs as FLAC...

Originally I used Exact Audio Copy to rip my CDs as FLAC files but have since changed over to using MusicBee as it is easier to use and uses SecureRip for perfect copies and AccurateRip to validate them.
