August NPD numbers (NA sales)

If Microsoft release an all new console in 2yrs you can have my house.

the xbox only lasted 4yrs, 2 years from now maybe 3yrs then yes have no doubt we will see the next console from them. TBH if this is the case its not looking to good for SONy and their 7/10yr lifespan for the PS3

Yeah if Microsoft release a console and aim it for £350 on release or so the PS3 is gonna be in a bad situation, I can't see the PS3 being miles cheaper than what it is now in 2 years.

Where did Sony say they expected 7-10 years from the Playstation 3?

I wouldn't be surprised. They seem to have thought that the PS3 would mimic the Playstation 2, which has lasted 7 years. They've even followed the same strategies in it's design and marketing to try and replicate it's success. Heck, it even has the same controller..

Sony Computer Entertainment America President and CEO Kaz "Riiiiiiidge Racer" Hirai sat down for a comfy chat with CNet the other day, and, as per the typical Sony interview these days, produced some ambitious commentary.
On the subject of the PS3's $600 price tag, the Sony president had the following bit of consumer advice to impart:

"I think that we are offering a very good value for the consumers. We look at our products having a 10-year life cycle, which we've proven with the PlayStation. Therefore, the PlayStation 3 is going to be a console that's going to be with you again for 10 years. We're not going to ask the consumers to suddenly buy another PlayStation console in five years time, and basically have their investment go by the wayside.

I don't doubt the comment, however I do doubt what he says, there is no way the PS3 will last for 10 years. It's only been out here for 6 months and the PC is about to start its new generation of graphics. In 2 years time it will look a lot poorer than PC, so there is no chance it will last 10.

The PS2 only lasted 10 years due to poor competition. Sony don't have that luxury any more.

Good point. It was up against the Dreamcast for about 18 months if that, Nintendo were between consoles (Nintendo 64 and GameCube) and the GameCube was a step towards to gaming casuals that the Wii has gathered. The Xbox was an excellent console, but it was a little late to the party and found it hard to swing it back the other way, despite a very good line-up of games titles. Once they killed the Xbox to work on the 360 the PS2 had no competition.

More importantly, the PS2 was the only DVD player out of the box set-up, everyone knew DVD would replace VHS, it's a little different with the PS3 and Blu-Ray, one because HD-DVD might win the battle and is cheaper and secondly, because a lot of people really don't think it's going to replace DVD.
