My aunt is fed up with my cousin not doing enough homework and spending all his time using msn to chat to friends. Unfortunately, he does need the internet for homework and stuff, but is there a way to completely disable msn/messanger on a windows xp pc, so that he coudn't use it even if he were to download and install a new copy or something?

Thanks!

thanks, that looks quite good actually! Shame it's not free past the trial period.

Alternatively, i could block the msn port on the router?? Does msn have it's own unique port that i could block on the netgear?

You should be able to block it. I am not sure of the ports though.

snow patrol are you still about? I have just added you to my MSN if you come online I have something you might be interested in.

Cheers,

I'd just block the Messenger server IPs on the router. No chance of connecting then regardless of what client he uses. Don't remember them off the top of my head (except 65.54.239.82 - which is webmessenger).

i'm sure on my router MSN has it's own entry.

And you can set up rules so it will only work certain times of the day and for certain 'users'

not 100% sure as at work at the mo, but that's on a D-link ADSL router.

the netgear d834gt doesn't seem to. If i block ports 443 and 1863, msn doesn't work, but neither to https sites, which is a pain. Blocking 1863 on its own does nothing.
Not sure how to block specific ips on this router...anyone know?

Better training from a younger age ? Tell him not to use MSN until he has finished his homework!

Nah, I would ignore her too. :D
