Auschwitz 70th Anniversary

I was there last week, a well and truly harrowing experience.

I did Auschwitz and Auschwitz-Birkenau in half a day. I could have easily spent an entire day between the two.

RIP

Reading brian reade's piece in the mirror this morning.

If you're looking for any kind of context, just reading those first few paragraphs is enough to make you feel numb.

Like many things in this world today and it's horrible near past, you'd wish you never knew:(

When i came back from there last year i spent weeks researching info on the Holocaust!! What an eye opener i had

Listening to it most of the day on 5 live. Brutal, harrowing accounts from some of the survivors. Honestly gives me chills.

Horrible horrible stuff

There was a program on Channel 4 at the weekend which was about a documentary that was never finished in the late 40s.
The IWM have now completed the edit.
All the film was from cameramen in the field at the time and it was one of the most horrific programs I have seen.
I think everyone knows and has seen the photos, but some of the footage was like nothing I'd ever seen. i nearly had to turn it off.
It was very humbling to hear from some of the survivors and some of the soldiers who were there at the liberation of the camps.

This was the program if you want to 'catch up'.

The eichmann show on bbc2 the other week. Yikes. Showed some real footage during the trial. Terrible terrible clips.

I was there last year and without trying to sound callous I'm really glad I went. I've been given the chance to pay my respects to the many that died there and I'm still left stunned and appalled that one human being could treat another so callously :(

Something like 7 ton of hair was found there in a pile.

I've been in that room - and the room with all the shoes. You're just moved to tears at the harshness of the reality and suffering these poor people went through.

I remember a teacher telling me that he was behind a Japanese tour group who were laughing and shouting when they were walking through the gas chambers. He was obviously very annoyed.

I would have thought they would know better.

I went to Auschwitz and Auschwitz-Berkenau on a trip with school when I was young. It really has an effect on you, a lot more than reading about it or seeing it on TV did. I guess its hard for a young mind to believe that something so hideous could have ever occured, and it doesn't really hit you full force until you see it with your own eyes.
Although theres still equally horrendous things which happen in the world today. Maybe human beings will never change.

It still stuns me what people are capable of.

And when people try and freakin deny it even happened, what the hell is wrong with them?!
